Why is the government so expensive? The answer isn't what you think. It's demographics. If you applied today's spending to the demographics of 20 years ago you could cut income tax by 13p in the pound. The ageing society + shrinking workforce = expensive.

@LoftusSteve The right approach would have been to move away from state provision of health/welfare/pensions towards much more private provision. That should have happened 20 + years ago. Still, no time like the present!

@PMArslanagic Yes and it's getting worse. We need to increase tax payers and tax rate and reduce the number of entitlements by improving healthspan and raising retirement age.

@PMArslanagic Yes but the Treasury plan to plug the gap in the working age population with migrants is short termist. Migrants will eventually use schools, the NHS & claim the state pension at the same rate existing residents do - and adopt the local birth rate pattern, too.

If you look at the cost of solar power five years ago, 10 years ago, or 20 years ago, it would have seemed cost-prohibitive. But the cost of solar power today is extremely low. The cost of batteries to store that energy has also dropped dramatically. Battery storage costs have fallen by a factor of 10 in the past five years. So many of the studies that were done were done in times past, when batteries were very expensive and solar power was very expensive. I would just encourage everyone to take another look at the cost of solar and the cost of batteries. I think you’ll find that you’re pleasantly surprised. Elon Musk
