I have always questioned how when the sun is in the sky at the same time as the moon is it that we have a half moon or crescent moon if that happens because of "earth's shadow" but clearly earth isn't between them?

Earth's atmosphere. When sunlight passes through the atmosphere, it scatters shorter blue wavelengths of light, creating the blue appearance. The moon itself is in outer space, but because we view it from Earth's surface, the atmosphere gives the illusion of a blue sky around it
