Edgar Wright on his favourite shot in 'Black Narcissus' (1947): "I think 'Black Narcissus' (1947) is one of the greatest colour movies of all time. There is one particular shot towards the end of the film with Kathleen Byron, which, in my head, that is probably minutes of film, when in reality the shot is only on screen for less than two seconds And it's a shot of Kathleen Byron coming through a doorway, and it's part of an incredible climax, which I won't spoil if you've never seen the film. But it's one of those shots in Cinema that is ingrained on my brain. Like a lot of Powell and Pressburger films, I think it's just [has] a picturesque quality to it which is just somehow difficult to pinpoint exactly what the magic of Powell and Pressburger together is. But I think the thing is sometime these are the films that you keep returning to, is you can't kind of define exactly what it is about the film that keeps you obsessed, you just keep coming back. The pool hall scene in Carlito’s Way is one of the most suspenseful set pieces in all of crime cinema. However, when the studio executives saw an early cut, they thought it was too long and asked Brian De Palma to cut it back - but instead, he made it even longer. The writer of the film, David Koepp explains…. “We showed an early cut to the studio, and one of their notes was that the pool hall scene seemed too long. I was talking to Brian about it, and I said, “what do you think about this note that the pool hall scene is too long? I don't think they're right about that.” And he said, “No, no, no, they're absolutely right, they're absolutely right. But what they mean is that it's not long enough” And I thought he was just being cheeky and defiant. But actually, no - I mean, he knows suspense so well, he felt that it was just that he had failed to set up a little bit of the geography of the suspense - which is of course, his mastery. You know - the guys in the bathroom, the door is slightly open, the other guys over here - all that great establishment of where everybody is, and how close they are to each other, and what all the stakes are. The suspense only works later if that stuff's set up properly before. And so when he went back and furthered some of that coverage and expanded the front of the scene a little bit, the scene was nail biting and great. And they saw another cut and said, “much better shorter, much better shorter.”

Then, to have the success on top of that, after such a long layoff, just goes to show how good his stuff is. Ortiz features a HUGE sweeping slider that starts well behind the back of a left-hander, and breaks from one side of the earth to the other. Trying to decipher whether that pitch is going to land "in the zone" or not is VERY difficult, even for hitters that have a LOT of MLB experience like he faced at OKC. His fastball is firm, and he can hit 6s and 7s, so those 2 pitches play well off of each other. Welcome aboard, Robinson. It's been a LONG road, one you've navigated successfully.
