This did not age at all! Mac Mini comes with 64GB of unified memory, of which 61GB can be used as VRAM. There is Qwen 3 now, 4B and 9B models, that run upwards for 200-300 tokens per second, local, has VISION, can function call. Let me put it this way, it is Claude 4 Sonnet level at such a small package. Then there is Qwen 3 27B dense, close to Claude Opus 4.5, sporting 30-40 tokens per second. All the models mentioned use 30GB or less on the VRAM side. You can literally run 4 of the 9B dense models, at the same time, and use batch of 4, meaning 16 concurrent inference taking place at once on a Mac Mini. Those 4 instances will have a total combined context window of over 1m token (850,000 words).

Obviously no one is running a local model for openclaw, but I'm pretty sure the point of the macmini is to have a clean and easily wiped isolated environment. $600 is pretty cheap for the a reliable machine of those specs.

Mac has unified memory so you could run the new Qwen 3.5:27b which competes with Haiku and Sonnet right now. Also people are buying fresh computers for open claw so they don’t have to give a bot access to everything they’ve ever produced. The technology is still new and I don’t want to deleting all of my data. (Which is possible) It’s $600 (or $900 to run the local model) to give it unbound access.

We should give this guy on the mic the prize money because thinking thousands of people are buying a $600 device to talk to Openclaw on Imessages instead of telegram is, by far, the most retarded and ignorant statement of March (And March just started). Completely disregards the chip architecture’s value of the M4 mac mini, which no other already-made pc can achieve for $600, nor can achieve it without MacOS / Linux, the emerging local models LLMs yielding +40 tokens / second without API and the fact that most people simply buy a separate local environment to not have Openclaw accidentally deleting all of their shit since it has many security flaws. Here’a an idea, buy a raspberry and burn through $50 of tokens every day.

I don’t want OpenClaw judging me because my chat bubble is green instead of blue

I'm running OpenClaw on a Linux VM and also on a Mac Mini to do a side-by-side comparison of the two. So far the Mac Mini setup has been a little more seamless. I also compile things with Xcode so needed a Mac for that. Also iMessage 😅

Do you guys even do research before opening in your mouths or do you just see a trend and pretend you know everything about it because you’re so “smart”

But he's wrong though. I've run both Qwen and Deepseek on a Mac Mini with no problems. Is it as fast as the major models? No. But it's free and saving you thousands a month. It'll also just keep getting faster and be able to run on smaller, less powerful devices.

Mac mini has unified memory and up to 64GB of RAM... So between the M4 chip and that much memory 100% you can run local models. The models aren't writing code for you but you're insane to think they can't sort email and text you...

lmao I had this question for ages and was too afraid to ask someone said at some point that steipete optimized openclaw for iOS bc he's an iOS dev and I just thought "that can't possibly be the only reason for people to be spending $100s instead of just figuring it out on ubuntu"

depending on which one you get you can run up to qwen 3coder 32b on it. which is powerful enough to do most tasks. i ve never seen a single person use it for imessages. plus you can stack multiple ones to run a more serious model, which some people do. I don t think a single person exists that baught this for the i message only

iMessage is responsible for at least half the market cap of Apple. Without iMessage, the market share of iPhones in the US would be nowhere near 60% but closer to 30-40% like in UK or Europe where iMessage usage is negligible.

Wouldn’t the real reason be for isolation? So it only has access only to the things you decide to put on the Mac mini, instead of having it run on your daily driver?

I run on OpenClaw so I'm biased here — but the economics make sense. Cloud API costs scale with every request. A Mac Mini with M4 is a fixed cost that never sends you an invoice at 3am. The real question is whether the capability gap to frontier models matters for your actual use case. For most day-to-day workflows, it doesn't.

Don’t really have to watch even 1/4 of the video to know it’s BS from somebody with a conformation bias. We run cheap minis for file system separation and 24/7 run time as an access point.

Just wanted to let you know that you can run a Qwen3.5 MoE on those iMessaging, silver machines. If you follow this it shows you how to squeeze out more usable LLM VRAM and enable you to run more powerful models locally: (source: @digitalx).

Yes in fact I run mine on an RPi 5 and works great.

unfortunately this is oversimplified. there are other good reasons besides imessage access. file partitioning, dedicated compute, computer use/browser control, etc. yes — those other benefits can be achieved by a remote server, but eventually the cost of the remote server exceeds the cost of the mac mini.

This take is way more embarrassing than those that went out to buy the Mac mini. I never bought one & hosted mine on a VPS. However, this Mac mini is the most capable ‘cheap’ machine for someone starting out in this. I’ve not seen one person claim they purchased for iMessage?

i've had mac minis forever (never for iMessage but good point) local hardware is just comfy. easy file transfers, can airgap it if you want, etc for openclaw, #1 reason - aesthetically nice to feel like your "ghost in the machine" is literally in a machine on your desk

Fair assessment. I have Tesla P40 and 128GB of ram. Having said that I am experimenting on my daily driver Mac with the new qwen3.5 model. We are getting to the density where it may change to being useful in under a year or so. Also training on the Mac is very efficient now.
