Why String Theory Won't Die The string theory idea refuses to die because it's one of the few frameworks that forces a quantum object and spacetime geometry into the same picture. In the render, a closed string isn’t just a loop doing pretty vibrations. Its internal phase pattern is... a quantum degree of freedom, shown as color. At the same time, its motion stirs ripples in the surrounding metric, shown as the fabric below. One object, two roles. Branes made that picture much richer. When Physicists found that open strings can end on objects called D-branes, many important ideas became easier to organize. Things like gauge fields, black hole microstates, holography, and deep dualities gained a clearer place inside the theory. They showed that String Theory is not only about tiny vibrating strings, but also about larger structures that help connect Quantum Physics, Geometry, and Gravity.

This is one of the wildest podcasts I’ve ever seen. I just wrapped a 2.5-hour deep dive on string theory with Peter Woit (Not Even Wrong) and Joseph Conlon (Why String Theory). Two sharp minds, two entirely opposing views. I’m not here to tell you who’s “right.” This is about the future of fundamental physics. It’s historic that the door is opening for these sorts of conversations to occur publicly and at length, with as much time given to each party as they need, while keeping it respectful, productive, and, of course, technical (it is TOE, after all). Some see string theory as being given a free pass (held to a different standard than competing theories). Some see it as a tool for probing high-energy YM/GR. Others see it as the best hope we have for a final theory of everything. The fact that this conversation even exists is remarkable, and I’m honored to play a small role in making it happen. 🚨 BREAKING: Quantum reality doesn’t choose a state. It holds all of them at once. This is called a Bloch Sphere and every possible state of a quantum system lives on its surface. Spin up. Spin down. Or anything in between. That “in between” is the wild part. It means quantum systems don’t just exist in one state… they exist as superpositions of possibilities. A Bonus render of Electron Holography for our Quantum Mechanics Lecture Series. We’re staging a TEM-style electron holography shot as a single 3D scene. A coherent electron wave ψ(x,y,t) enters from the left as a localized packet, gets split by a thin biprism phase wedge, then bends around a central nanoring that stands in for an enclosed magnetic flux. The wave evolves by Schrödinger dynamics, so its intensity ρ=|ψ|² is literally the electron detection probability density, while the probability current j=(1/m)Im(ψ*∇ψ) acts like a conserved flow of that density across the plane. The main surface is a living whose height tracks |ψ| and whose skin color cycles with arg(ψ). On top of it, luminous current ribbons trace streamlines of v=j/(ρ+ε), so you can see how phase gradients steer the flow around the ring and back into interference. Stealing Energy from a Rotating Black Hole A rotating black hole doesn’t just pull things in. It drags spacetime itself into motion. In the spinning region just outside the horizon, nothing can remain still in any normal sense. That strange rule opens a loophole. One incoming body can split, with one piece swallowed while the other escapes with more energy than it came in with. A Penrose-style heist where the difference is paid for by the black hole’s rotation. The same idea shows up in wave form. A coherent packet can skim that region and return brighter, as if the geometry itself acted like an amplifier. Split near the ergosphere and you can steal spin. Skim it as a wave and you can come back louder.
