The 1911 theft is the real answer. Vincenzo Peruggia walked out of the Louvre with her and the two-year manhunt made front pages worldwide. Before that she was known mostly to art insiders. Leonardo's sfumato technique and that ambiguous smile gave critics something to write about, but newspapers did the marketing. Her fame exploded after the theft and never went back. Same logic as today.
