Why there are 360 degrees in one circle ?

This is not fully true. The use of cosmic wheel representing 360 degrees was mentioned in Rigveda and also in Mesopotamian texts which are way more ancient than Babylonians.

The divisors of the number 360 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 24, 30, 36, 40, 45, 60, 72, 90, 120, 180 and 360. A number with many divisors can be advantageous in many situations, especially in practical contexts where you need to divide something into equal parts.

I prefer a simpler explanation. 360 is divisible by: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 24, 30, 36, 40, 45, 60, 72, 90, 120, 180 an integer number of times. Very handy. Any suggestion of 360 to be used for this metric would have been readily or enthusiastically taken up.

The sexagesimal number system, the 360 for a circle, originated with the ancient Sumerians around the 3rd millennium BCE. They developed it for counting, math, and astronomy. The Akkadians adopted the system from the Sumerians. Nobody referred to themselves as Babylonian.

There’s an even more basic reason why 360 degrees was chosen (and probably why the year was divided into 12 months, the day divided into 24 hours, and the hour divided into 60 minutes). They are all numbers that can be broken evenly into lots of fractions. Almost all the fractions can be used to carve up a 360 degree circle. You can evenly cut up a 360 degree circle into halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, ninths, tenths, twelfths, fifteenths, eighteenths, etc. — two 180 degree halves — three 120 degree thirds — four 90 degree quarters — five 72 degree fifths — six 60 degree parts — eight 45 degree parts — nine 40 degree parts — ten 36 degree parts — twelve 30 degree parts — fifteen 24 degree parts — eighteen 20 degree parts — twenty 18 degree parts

This explanation is incomplete: Babylonians used a sexagesimal (60) numerical system which they inherited from the Sumerians. This system evolved from traditional finger counting that uses the three segments of the main fingers (minus the thumb which acts as the counter)

I figured 360 is highly highly divisible. That’s it.

So if it stuck throughout the millennia why at one point did we have 13 months of 28 days (moon cycle) which also equates to 364 days.

I thought zero was invented in India, so it is strange for someone outside claiming 60 number pattern was there to create calendar, come with better story

Arbitrary by convention. There is also a “system” using 400 degrees for a full circle. Each right angle is 100 degrees. It’s not divisible by 3 or 6, though.

Because some guy made it up.

Yah and they screwed up that 12 months calendar because it was supposed to be 13. Our time should be on a 24.5 hrs rotation based on gravitational pull and tides . Currently we work on 24.2 hr clock that was changed to 24 for convenience. Our whole circadian rhythm is off.

I thought the US had 17 3/8 degrees Fahrenheit in a circle...

Babylonions?? Chal jhutta!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣.... Sab saale agenda pelte hai ... Chor kahin ke

@grok what would pi be if a full circle had been 100 degrees?

Why did they have a number system with base 60? Possibly this👇

As soon as the video used BCE, I knew the rest was going to be questionable.

@grok do your thing

The 60 unit is bases on "highly composite numbers" which where easy to divide without fractions. That is why we have eggs by the dozen. 12 is also a HCN. Also you can count to 60 with your fingers. I leave that as homework.

Hatt they copied from Hindu scientists , 360 was listed in our books that are 5000 years old .. you kids

In a parallel universe Tony Hawk is famous for „the 250“ 🤷🏼♂️

Alien gift…

It’s because 360 has many factors.

They were wrong and those who discover the truth convert the truth to their fault and kept it hidden for their own good.

False

The true is if you look at a sun travelling in the sky from dawn to dusk and measure how many suns fit into that semicircle, the number will be 180. So, the opposite semicircle is also 180. And the total is 360.

Interesting

Sumerians.
