Why train wheels are conical

The slight conical section acts like a differential for corners and a self centering device on the straight. Railway wheels also have flanges on the inner side as a final resort and these contacting the rail is the squeal you hear sometimes on a turn.

I’m no train guy, but ive never seen train wheels like these.

That's OK for toys and classroom science experiments, but have you ever seen a full-sized train wheel look like that? No, the wheel is somewhat flat bottomed wth a rim on the inside to hold the train on the track and to guide the train on the track around curves!🤔🤠

My brain listening to this while my inner child just goes weeeee 😆

My mind is in the gutter. Ima step out

Interesting! So the conical shape helps the train stay stable on the tracks, especially when going around curves. The narrower or wider part of the wheel touches the rail depending on the train’s position, allowing it to “self-correct” and stay on track. Simple yet clever!

Informative

To achieve stability

Train wheels have a flange that keep them on track.

Nature's own submarine periscope

I thought they had a flange?

They’re not💀💀 they consist of two circles. One smaller circle to go on the track with a larger circle that goes in the inner side of the track to keep it balanced

Conical wheels enable self-alignment on tracks, a logical design promoting stability and efficiency without unnecessary complexity in rail systems.

Wow. Who knew, but it’s obvious when you think about it

Here are short rewrites: Why train wheels have a cone shape The reason train wheels are conical Why train wheels aren’t flat

And differentiated from the axle

Duh?

'tsbalansce...thadz whay. 😎

Kirain biar muternya lebih asik aja

It's great 👍👍👍

Art and physics move the same way... balance is everything.

They arent that funny

And why wheels are flanged and why curves are elevated/super elevated

@grok explain science behind it

Gotta love physics.

conics keep it centered.

Wow nice mechanic.

Este pequeño video, podría ayudar a la SEMAR MÉXICO @SEMAR_mx a entender cómo corren los trenes en la curvas del Tren Transísmico .!!
