In Caracas, I heard from Génesis Garvett, a PSUV youth leader and member of the National Assembly of Venezuela. Génesis talks about a Chavista approach to communication, a contribution of President Nicolás Maduro, in which the reality in the streets and organization on the ground carries more weight than imperialist narratives imposed online. “He said that what we do on social media alone is not so important if it’s not organic and doesn’t contribute to the on the ground social organization of the people. For him, the act of communication begins in the streets, in the organization that people have within their territory to contest power and transform their reality.” “There are those who engage solely in activism, even on social media, through criticism and observation. But all of that becomes inorganic or even immoral in the face of the reality of our people who struggle daily.” “We believe deeply in this struggle.
