NEW: Alex Murdaugh has murder charges overturned by the state Supreme Court after they say a local county clerk “placed her fingers on the scales of justice.” Alex Murdaugh was a South Carolina lawyer, and his trial caught national attention for the killing of his wife, Maggie, and his son, Paul. The case gained so much fame that it even got a Netflix show, Murdaugh Muders: A Southern Scandal. Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill tampered with the jury and pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, perjury, and two counts of misconduct in office after showing sealed crime scene photos to a reporter and lying about it. Hill also admitted to promoting her book on the trial through her public office and is serving probation. The South Carolina Supreme Court stated the prosecutor's effort to get the conviction was in vain because “Hill placed her fingers on the scales of justice, thereby denying Murdaugh his right to a fair trial by an impartial jury.” South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson disagrees with the court's ruling and “will aggressively seek to retry Alex Murdaugh for the murders of Maggie and Paul as soon as possible.” Murdaugh is still in jail for committing financial crimes, including stealing from his clients, serving consecutive 40-year federal and 27-year state sentences.
