“Round about the same time we made a political appointment for national Security Advisor of Jonathan Powell and as far as I remember we appointed him and then we began the DV” Morgan McSweeney confirms that Jonathan Powell didn’t receive his Developed Vetting security clearance until after he was appointed as the National Security Advisor in November 2024. He was appointed as the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to the British Indian Ocean Territory on 6th September 2024, meaning he didn’t have the appropriate clearances to view classified documents in August 2024, as I asked the Prime Minister at PMQs last week. This Government is happy to play fast and loose with national security in order to prop up Keir Starmer’s chumocracy.

What security clearance did he have? Correspondence between Powell and the FCDO was being conducted over insecure email. Powell himself was allegedly still working in China for his Inter Mediate consultancy whilst privy to discussions on the detail of the deal.
