It doesn't matter. He wasn't expecting a motorcycle to split lanes like that. It's illegal. The bike was behind cars in two lanes and shouldn't have even been there. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. 100% the bikers fault.

Splitting lanes is for in the city where traffic is bumper to bumper. It is not for speeding past the flow of traffic on a highway.

The motorcyclist was traveling faster than the flow of traffic and lane splitting. The driver of the SUV tried to dodge debris on the road. Both were at fault, and this is a reason lane splitting should be discouraged. Like it or not, it is very difficult to spot motorcyclists, no matter how diligent a driver is with their observations on the road. It’s hard to see them in the rear view and we can’t hear them until they pass.

This is why it's so stupid that they ride in between cars. It's legal in California but not where I live but we have so many that came over and they do it here.

I really don't care if it's legal for motorcycles to pass like this. If they value their life they shouldn't. It has always been the rules of the road to stay with the flow of traffic. Why some feel privileged to go where they want when they want is beyond me, but price paid.

The SUV never left its lane. The motorcyclist attempted to ride between the lanes. That was the proximate cause of the collision. Stupid. The biker futzed around and found out.

As someone who advocates for lane splitting at low speeds in heavy traffic; this was a stupid and reckless move by the rider. I don't fault the SUV driver one bit for trying to avoid debris in their lane. Why would they expect someone splitting like that?

You can split lanes in a motorcycle, if it is legal in your state. That doesn't make it a smart thing to do.

Best way to not get yourself into an accident is not to leave it up to other people. Don't tailgate. Don't speed. Don't lane split if you're not absolutely sure you're good. Notice most of these "accidents" usually stem from one side (usually the cammer ironically) acting like they own the road. Drive defensively and your "accident" rate will go down tremendously. I drive daily in Florida and have avoided easily over 50 accidents by putting myself first. Slow the fuck down, move the fuck over, let the idiot do what they "gotta go". Uninvolve yourself in their transit and you'll be better off. Some people suck at driving and it's on YOU to determine YOUR level of safety. Yeah sometimes you're gonna get rear ended by a semi, but shit happens that we can't control. MOST of these cams are shit happening because the cammer is doing some risky shit on the road.

Lane splitting is stupid unless traffic is completely stopped. High speed passing between lanes leaves you vulnerable to unexpected move by drivers, as in this case where the driver swerved to avoid an obstacle on the road. He isn't going to see you coming on his right

Looks like 100% the bikers fault. If this is California where lane splitting is legal, the state advises that it not happen above 50 mph and at no faster than 10-15mph of surrounding traffic. So not illegal to do but this rider appears to be over the 10-15 range. Had the rider been doing the speed limit and driving defensively, this wreck wouldn’t have occurred. Too fast for conditions. The SUV was trying to avoid an obstacle in the roadway and had no option to avoid it aside from the maneuver the driver made.
