Balloon framing REQUIRES fire blocking per code and is more structurally and wind shear sound with proper hangers/strapping due to less hing points which ultimately bulges. We ALWAYS balloon frame when possible. Seems disingenuous to omit the fire blocking.

Our house is balloon framed - not at all worried about stud or joist strength, been here almost 200 years. Now fire... that scares me.

My mothers 150 year old balloon framed Victorian sold me on this concept. Two fires and minimal damage done. The problem is not the framing but the subpar materials now available.

Nice explanation.

In the days when floor joists were solid wood, balloon framing in two or three story stairwells made sense. It avoided the differential shrinkage between the floor joists and wall studs (which caused unsightly buckling of the drywall).

Now discuss how modern framing with thousands of air driven nails is crap, and we need to go back to proper craftsmanship

its actually making a come back with the woke barndominium people. its not ideal but our country was pretty much made with it. its not as bad as youre making it. especially with todays flame retardants

My front deck was built with ledger board.. that board failed and entire deck fell off.. I attempted to fix it with new wood and some other stuff - but sadly it only lasted another year before rest of it failed.. ended up replacing entire thing that year.

I shoulda just replaced it from start.. but thought I could get a few years out of fixing it.. I was wrong... the Deck as a whole was kinda bleh.. surprised it lasted as long as it did..

It has to be mostly the latter, We can always find some material that will take the load these ledgers were unable to. But the fire chases, that's a killer.
