I find the discussion about sacrifice particularly interesting, and agree with @peterthiel that the language about this can be confusing. Every choice we make has opportunity costs, which means we are constantly sacrificing these alternative pathways. But the implication is that we choose what we think is the best pathway, so somewhat paradoxically, by sacrificing the alternative pathways we are acting in our own long-term self-interest - all things considered. In extreme cases, even sacrificing your own life might be in your own self-interest, if this act helps your loved ones or a cause you believe in to survive and/or thrive, thus securing your legacy. The other definition of sacrifice is that you should make choices that are against your own long-term self-interest, all things considered. This doctrine of altruism will ultimately lead to your own destruction if taken too far, yet it is still espoused by some as the more moral pathway - supposedly because it helps others. The problem with this is that if everyone acted in such a "sacrificial" self-destructive manner, it benefits nobody, so this doesn't seem like the right strategy. It seems to me that the disagreement in this discussion is caused by confusion between these two definitions. From all that I have seen from @jordanbpeterson, I believe the first definition of sacrifice is what he is talking about, but Mr Thiel appears to assume he is using the second definition. We probably need a better term for "acting in our own long-term self-interest (all things considered), including giving up anything that gets in the way of this goal". Perhaps we need to bring back Aristotle's idea of Eudaimonia - using the term sacrifice can lead some to assume this means acting against your own self-interest, resulting in them either rejecting the idea or acting in a self-destructive manner.
