Why would this happen?

Aerial Survey. they operate as a 3rd party doing aerial surveys for mapping, pictometry, aerial measurements. Usually like this is an area scan for arerial imagery and mapping for things like Bing maps, Apple Maps, Eagle View roof measuring, etc. From the plane owners website:

Lidar scan for geographic mapping. City planning ect Multi specteral mapping Used for anything for plant health, ir mapping, water retention mapping for contruction Photo mapping. Arial views on Google and such This is a scanning pattern of some sort what kind idk but there are alot of uses

Sorry that is a lydar drone..it's called mapping the battle field ..they are mapping your home and any underground structure ..going that heavy means their looking at something

Because once they make the layer like this , they fall back into line . And repeat. Many laugh at this , but it’s happened.
