@mathandcobb this is just wishful thinking. You want AI to stop doing math research because it undermines people being paid to do math and mathematicians lose prestige of doing advancements. It's all about ego. Truly curious people will try to understand these proofs. Adapt to the new norm.

@mathandcobb You all want paid, which is fair but we’re past the point of holding back advancement to save feelings.

@mathandcobb No offense - this is just cope - stop acting like a human is required - it won't be long before we can just distill it to prove it without the sloggy politics and ring kissing.

we do not care ask AI to create faster than light travel and strap me on there i don't care if humans have no idea how it works you can take all the time in the world to read 100 pages proofs all you want, i want to solve all the problems, ask all the new questions, solve all those questions, and iterate 100 times until we are able to do centuaries of math progress in minutes i want this done with medicine, physics, chemistry, computer science, chip design, and whatever new technology comes out of AI advancements humans are important, but I want cancer cured NOW, not in 20 years because MD have to read the whole thing over and over again until they understand it

@mathandcobb This is hypocritical. Why do humans need to understand any of these proofs at all? AI has already replaced many fields people spent their lives on, why mathematics (of all) should be different? Mathematics is especially suitable for AI.

@mathandcobb I really try to empathize with you all, but can't. You should be interested in progress and solutions to these problems, no matter where they come from. I understand it's bad for your egos, but math is too important to have humans slowing it down. Too much at stake.

@mathandcobb They attempted around 4,000 problems to achieve that ~10% success.

@mathandcobb Mathematics were made by humans also to develop computers, computer software, to reach the stars, etc. What is this notion that it just exists to be treated as a static artform (for humans by humans)?

mathematics was made by humans for humans. i think you need to rethink what mathematics actually is and where you live in. you fundamental principles are wrong. your take is therefore wrong. why would you agree to more childern and adults dying of cancer just because of your ego if AI could have solved cancer earlier then humans.

@mathandcobb That's an interesting posture, but we cannot expect that the AI advance at the same velocity that mathematicians can understand. We need to accept that AI just go faster that the pace that we can understand.

@mathandcobb I wish all science was done like it was prior to like 1960 when people could genuinely spend all their time doing research and what they were good at and that’s just not the case anymore. People now spend so much time trying to just get by.

@mathandcobb You’re wrong about humans for humans because this has caused decades of gated credentialed communities that a selfishly detached from reality. They progress is centuries overdue and your advisors know it too. The how is fixed. Focus on the what now.

@mathandcobb I get it ... Also this is too slow and is ngmi Need to think more radically about epistemology. Also who gives a damn who gets credit, I just want to know the truth and be able to leverage the truth.

@mathandcobb AI doesn't need you to advance humanity. All this is about ego and thinking only humans can do meaningful research. That's not true!

@mathandcobb You're trying to paint a veeery favorable view of the mathematicians. The argument is from "yeah, they want to see it proven, but not at any cost..", but I think it's somewhat easy to see that even if the cost were lowered by a lot, they would still not want it taken from them.

@mathandcobb Bullshit. AI is smarter than you mathematicians. Why waste years on problems that AI can solve? Stop being arrogant

Profilbild von raven

@mathandcobb I can’t believe “who gets the credit” is more important to mathematicians than advancing the field of mathematics itself. Well at least AI will solve math regardless

@mathandcobb But i think we are also totalling missing the point. The besuty in solving those huge problems is not to have a proof of 3000 pages that solves the problem, but more hetting new way of viewing and combining mathematical objects that will also help to solve other problems.

@mathandcobb We need a joint effort to keep humans up to speed & in the know. A better understanding about math solutions will also mean devising better ways to make AI even better. First thing I thought hearing the controversies. Cooperation trumps competition, but I doubt Altman gets that.

Profilbild von .

@mathandcobb It would have likely taken months, possibly years, for these proofs to come out (some likely not at all) had OpenAI stopped and worked with researchers. As far as credit goes, this isn't much different than if 2 competing groups are racing to publish the proof, one will not win

@mathandcobb What a loser mindset. AI is ofc still working alongside humans, it's just that it can now work alongside humans who don't enjoy perspiration and academics hate it cz they are not any better at inspiration part than any other human.

@mathandcobb Disagree on this, as a mathematician i understand working on a problem for years all of a sudden for it to be cracked is scary and I do agree about the new problem discovery. However progress is progress and its ramifications go beyond theory in certain cases

@mathandcobb Advancing the field of mathematics is more important than advancing individual mathematicians, no? As for understanding what AI makes, you can always ask AI to explain it to you.
