Three years ago today, I was indefinitely suspended by Project Veritas, the organization I founded out of my dad’s garage when I was on probation at 25, built into a 25 million dollar, 75 person organization, exposing corruption from 2009 to 2023. At 38, I was fired from the company I founded. The six-hour board meeting, a recording of it here, defies all explanation. There was the picture of me nailed to a cross, the allegation I “stole a pregnant lady’s sandwich,” the board’s contention that “black cars” instead of UberX was a fraudulent expenditure. Donors pleaded with me to hire private security while the board believed spending money on personal security was misappropriation. A board member said he “wanted to carve out my heart and eat it.” One of our lawyers paid to defend me said he “wants to punch me in your punch face, enough bad things can’t happen to you.” Our fundraiser took issue with showing up in the street with our subjects, a hallmark of what we do. Some went to a New York DA to try to get me arrested. After the board fired me, they used the millions in the bank I raised to sue me, brought me to SDNY to try to get an injunction to stop me from continuing to do any journalism at all. It was the most twisted, evil, irrational experience I’ve ever endured — brought upon me by my own creation. It is a story so bizarre that to this day people still don’t understand why it happened. Later we found out in depositions board members had investments that “could be sold to big Pharma like Pfizer.” We were investigating Pfizer at the time. Litigation is still ongoing, and there will be more coming out about the deals that were done behind the scenes. But what happened was not just a story about greed. It was about original sin: pride, envy, and fear. Those things are vastly compounded when you are exposing — and being targeted by — the most powerful people in the world. I remember when the feds were getting secret warrants against us, and I remember how scared everyone was. I remember how much money we spent defending ourselves from lawsuits, spending time in court. I remember people questioning our very reason for being due to how much liability we incurred, how threatened we felt, how expensive it was. Why take all these risks in the first place? Why spend money on defense when we can spend it on each other? A board member’s wife got scared when the FBI raided our homes. As the institution grew, it sought self-preservation instead of the pursuit of its mission. The lesson I learned is that if you choose to go down the path of exposing evil, if you choose to walk through that dark valley, you must fear no evil. You better make sure the people you surround yourself with cannot be threatened or bribed. They must be unbreakable, courageous, and selfless. I learned at 39 years old that their price has to be their life, and my life has to be my offering. If the mission was to continue, these core values were a prerequisite. But where am I to find these people? Even the disciples had a Judas. I realized that my fight for truth and virtue is a fight against human nature itself. Alfred Jay Nock once wrote it is very difficult to improve society through political action. People in political movements talk about virtue and “doing the right thing,” yet their own lives are governed by self-interest and satisfying their needs and desires in the easiest way possible. The masses continue to be fooled by such people and led by sagacious knaves. An unspeakable truth dawned upon me that was hard to accept and difficult to escape, but is now the beginning of my wisdom, and that truth is this: When people are pinched in their pursuit of absolute truth, the wicked acts of the 12 staffers at Project Veritas are symbolic of us all...
