City Power removes 3 tonnes of illegal cables in Kew: City Power, working with JMPD and SAPS, conducted an electricity enforcement operation in Kew, Johannesburg. Teams removed an estimated 3,000kg of illegal aluminium cables, worth about R200,000. Properties at 131 and 133 10th Road were disconnected after illegal connections and unregistered meters were found. City Power says illegal connections, cable theft and vandalism are placing severe pressure on Johannesburg’s electricity network. The operation forms part of a wider intervention following concerns raised in Alexandra, including overloaded networks, illegal connections, meter bypassing, cable theft and vandalism. City Power says it pays about R250-million a month for electricity supplied through the Alexandra network, while only about R29 million is recorded as revenue. An Alexandra Electricity Imbizo will be held on 18 August at 10:00 at the AlexSan Kopano Resource Centre. Residents are urged to report suspicious activity and electricity infrastructure theft.

[WARNING: SOME VIEWERS MAY FIND THE LANGUAGE OFFENSIVE] City of Johannesburg officials conducted a multi-departmental bylaw enforcement operation in Ormonde, continuing their efforts to crack down on illegal water, sewer, and electricity connections. During the operation, it was found that Lakewood Hotel owes more than R19 million in electricity bills, and several property encroachments were also uncovered. Initially, city officials faced some resistance upon arriving in Ormonde but managed to gain access and carry out inspections. Further investigations uncovered a water bypass, an electricity bypass, and the lack of approved building plans. The City now plans to move forward with a forensic audit of the property.
