Wild. I do not remember this. April 12, 2009, Dodgers @ Diamondbacks. Randy Wolf hitting with one out and Andre Ethier at third with Juan Pierre at second. Dodgers get a run after Wolf lines out and Ethier touches home before the tag is applied to Pierre.

That just made me miss Vin all over again

So much happening here. 1. Vin Scully is incredible. What a gem. 2. Wolf and Haren had nothing, lol, 88 mph heat 3. Vin is actually mistaken it seems- it wasn't because Lopez chose to tag instead of step on 2nd, if Ethier would have crossed home first.

It seems like Andre ethier knows what’s going on cuz he just books it straight home in a full sprint and didn’t even think about going back to 3rd. Baseball iq at 1000 lol

Pain

How again does the run count when Either did not tag after the catch?

I’m more confused why the damn roof is open lol

The only miss of finally seeing the Dodgers beat the Yankees in the WS like my grandparents was not hearing Vin. :(

Man I love EVERYTHING about this clip

@DodgerBlue1958 “Let’s figure it out” almost feels like Vin is sitting next to me and trying it explain it

@DodgerBlue1958 I remember an interview with Torre where he said Bob Schaefer had alerted him to this. He recognized it as the 4 out play

Do you know how you stop giving up a run on a double play from a fly/line out? Touch the base the lead runner departed from before you leave the field.

@NWKMF @biblulz if you told me there was a 4th out rule in baseball before yesterday I would’ve thought you were on drugs.

Timing plays are constantly misunderstood by fans.

Loved Vin Scully, but that was a terrible explanation. The run counted because the third out was made AFTER Ethier crossed the plate. Since the second baseman turned it into a tag play, the run counts. It really is a stupid rule, but it happens.

Randy Wolf 🤔

Randy Wolf? Haven't heard that name in forever.

@UnpluggedDoug

You still have to tag on a fly.

RIP Vin Scully

@andrewtoddPNW I remember the Dodgers losing a game to the angels at Anaheim Stadium on something similar where the time run did not score before the tag was applied

It does look like Either understands the possible situation

Just to here vin scully explain what’s going on is worth revisiting

Got lost in 2010’s dodgers nostalgia and Vin Scullys voice I gotta rewatch the whole thing

@clopresti86

@grok Explain the "timing" play, why the run counts by Eithier and the 4th out rule that is in effect here.

Randy who?

God I miss Vin Skully🥹

Dare I say…Scully is wrong here.

It is interesting. It is some sort of loophole. It doesn’t make any sense. The rule does not make sense to anyone with a baseball mind. I hate the rule, but I understand kind of where they’re going so if you just threw the third there, then the runner is out no run scores

This is not what happened last night, this is the correct timing play, last night was not.

Vinny never does get this right -- bless his heart...

Nice to hear vin.

I remember this!!

Miss these days, baseball seemed more pure Small ball still lived

No one on god’s green earth could have ever so eloquently articulated this ruling better than vinny
