Wild scene in ‘DEVS’ where they use a quantum supercomputer to see back in time a billion years and then one second into the future. 👀 This show asks the question: if reality is fully deterministic, do we actually have free will at all?

OP on reddit posted today a wild thread that touched on the quantum aspect. One of the more fascinating reads in a long time. TLDR: Jimmy Carter UFO Legend – The Shocking Claim In 1979, deeply religious President Jimmy Carter reportedly read a top-secret “Estimate of the Situation” document at his Oval Office desk. According to persistent UFO lore (and the original poster who claims to have seen copies), it revealed: • Humans were genetically engineered multiple times by different alien species • Major religious texts (Bible, Koran, etc.) were deliberately seeded as tools of social control • Our understanding of higher spiritual powers is completely wrong • This universe is just one tiny bubble in an infinite foamy multiverse bath • Some ancient beings have survived multiple Big Bangs and are god-like The story goes that Carter - confronted with this shattering reality - put his head in his hands and wept. Love this show. Doesn’t have strong rewatchability value but I was in love with this when it came out.

It can be both. Like a choose your own adventure book with pre determined lessons and outcomes in each storyline. If you shift an outcome by a choice you may still learn the lessons the soul intended to learn but under different circumstances. All choices may have one or several inevitable outcomes. Some quantum physicists theorize that each time you make a choice the universe splits where both choices are made creating the multiverse, but that’s another theory/argument.

incredible show. not sure why it's not talked about much more!

immediate problem with this is that if you can observer the future, you can choose to make a different choice. That mean's it's not truly deterministic. Consciousness exists as a maxwell's demon in the machine.

"if reality is fully deterministic, do we actually have free will at all?" Well, it's not reality though, it's a TV show. So no answer can possibly be gained from this.

I love that they went for that dark brooding soundscape instead of some cringe stereotypical dramatic soundtrack. The dread is so much more palpable.

This is so stupid. Anyone with a brain in this scenario would immediately try and stress test it. First start counting: "1, 2, 3, 4..." And then as soon as you hear 4, skip it and say 5. Or if you hear 5, say 4. The only loophole here is if the machine is picking (1/2)

People dont know how true this scene actually is. The box does contain everything, even the future. We just cant perceive everything in the box all at once. We are vastly limited to a very narrow linear perspective. Time goes only one way for us, but that is not the only way time can go.

This is retarded. If I saw myself on a screen saying "that's messed up" 1 second in the future, I would try to defy the machine by saying something else or keeping silent. Are the characters physically forced to repeat what is depicted on the screen?

Free will only exists for those inside of time. Easiest way to explain is a soccer game. The players' actions determine the score but an observer outside of time will know the score no matter what actions they take. Because time is finite for us we can't know all outcomes.

Determinism doesn’t kill free will—it reframes it. Even in a fully deterministic system, agents still compute futures locally with bounded information, so “choice” emerges from irreducible epistemic limits, not randomness.

Meh. Base level quantum brain teaser shit. Let kids today watch 12 Monkeys and Sunshine. That’ll fuck their minds up better than this Reddit tier POC slackjawed performance of people petrified of a percentage of a percent of Gods power.

This is the worst writing I've ever heard. Either get actors that can show deep emotions or don't put it in the scene. This just talking out what should be shown dialogue is amateurish at best.

Create a thought. Did you create it, or did you wait for it to arise? You lack full free will; you can make decisions based on your environment, but the situations are beyond your control, you can only react to them. The "I" is an illusion because you never created it in the first place, and you will not own it forever. You are a product of your social environment and the way you react to it that's what shapes your "I" is not entirely you. If we have free will, why do we never choose to come into life, and why can't we decide to live forever? Free will is a product of the ego, the attachment to the "I," the illusion of separation that traps consciousness in the cycle of samsara. May all beings find the path to liberation.🌱
