Will this answer surprise you? Or is it intuitive?

This is so interesting. If you think of the numbers as ratios I think it makes more sense. You either take 50 left handed people away, or you take one away and replace with a right handed person 🙂.

I’d argue the ‘intuitive’ / ‘obvious’ answer is 1 (i.e. to get from 99% to 98% you subtract 1) which is plainly incorrect and is designed to catch many out. One would need a sound understanding of percentages to work out the true answer so I’d argue it’s not intuitive.

I don't think this was intuitive. Part of the reason was having 99% be 99 people, so it's easy to think (not thinking) that 98% would be 98 people - 1 leaves. But it's %, which would be affected by reducing the total number. 98 of 99 is ~ 98.99%. 49 of 50. 😸

First thought was, I hope no amputation needs to be performed.😅 Second, (x-1) / x is equal to 98%. Yielding 50 who have to leave. Phew. 😂

Intuitive, like I knew it right away, but I was having trouble with the math to prove it.

when i do percentages in my head, i often scale the pop to 100. so this one is a freebie!

I “intuitively” knew that one was wrong. It took more working through the logic realize the answer is 50, so I would not say that was intuitive for me.

some might intuitively knew something odds. that removing 1 lefty won't make it 98% cus it's simple math. then realize that the one righty set the tempo. 1 as 2%of pop is 50pop -- 1/2%. thus reduce 50leftys as simple as if we want 1 as 50% -- 1 of 2. thus reduce 98leftys
