Wind and solar look cheap on paper, but only because their true costs are hidden. Power grids must balance supply and demand every second. Wind and solar cannot do that. Their output follows the weather, which is variable. So every megawatt of wind or solar requires a matching megawatt of reliable backup. A 100 MW wind farm does not replace a 100 MW gas plant. The gas plant still has to be built, staffed, fueled and kept ready at all times. Consumers are effectively paying for two systems, but only one is accounted for. Think of it like hiring a worker who only shows up 30% of the time. The hourly wage looks cheap, but you still need a fully trained backup worker available 24-7 to fill in for the other 70%. That backup is required and still costs money even when sitting idle. But the extra cost is ignored. This accounting trick explains why renewables look inexpensive in charts, while electricity prices soar in grids that rely heavily on them. Globally, the renewable failure is clear. In 2024, solar supplied just 1.4% of global primary energy. Wind supplied about 1.5%. Fossil fuels still provided around 87%. This is not a global energy transition. It is a costly experiment played by a handful of Western economies.

What did the Wind Turbines actually generate? About 1,000 Terrawatt-Hours (TWh). That’s 1 Trillion Kilowatt-Hours (kWh) That’s about 22 times Nigeria’s entire output. Average 5,000MW over a year x 8,760 hours is 43.8 TWh What about the cost of building an onshore wind Turbine? Rhode Island Senator Sheldon WhiteClub loves to falsely tell the public that offshore wind is the cheapest form of energy. He couldn’t be more wrong with his numbers. It’s no great mystery why he didn’t want to engage at today’s Senate EPW hearing regarding his bonkers logic (beyond asking me a dumb question of whether “18” is more than “9”). He knew I came loaded with receipts and my explanation dissecting his math and comparing energy sources would have made him look far more foolish than the purple haired lady on Monday. Kudos to Utah Senator John Curtis for wanting to actually engage on this important topic more substantively. Here’s the issue for Senator WhiteClub: He deliberately omits much of the other costs of wind, including the cost of “firming”, which is necessary to convert wind into a dispatchable power supply. Because the wind doesn’t always blow, there is a cost of storing it. When you look at the costs of an energy source, it’s important to look at the “all-in” numbers, and if you are trying to get educated on this stuff, don’t let your brain waste space on any info from WhiteClub.

This argument that “we can transition but our politicians aren’t willing to” doesn’t hold water. We’ve spent trillions globally over the last decade trying to get off fossil fuels, and they’re still 80% of our energy because they’re that good! Solar and wind, EVs, batteries, all have their use cases but they’re extremely expensive and not reliable. The only real alternative for energy generation is nuclear, and that has historically been vilified by activists. So Dr. Ayana is not being honest, we’ve tried to transition and the tech just isn’t there! And no we’re not “f*cked” because none of the extreme climate models are coming true, heat is safer than cold, crop yields are at an all time high, and extreme weather is not getting worse.

After years of pushing wind and solar, BlackRock's Larry Fink now admits forcing economies onto intermittent power was a mistake. "We need dispatchable power," he says, "or risk energy shortages." That admission comes after grids have already been weakened, though, after bills have already surged, and after energy security has long been eroded. Then there's Bill Gates. In 2019, Gates said he had divested from fossil fuels, but his filings show otherwise. In 2024, the Gates Foundation Trust held hundreds of millions of dollars in fossil fuel companies, its largest exposure in years. Today, the companies backed by Gates emit more CO2 annually than Russia, Japan and Germany combined. Like Fink, Gates has conceded that reliable energy is indispensable, and that he no longer considers global warming an existential threat. The timing of this backtracking isn't a coincidence. It comes as the elites envision a new golden control method, artificial intelligence. AI data centers require enormous energy inputs that intermittent renewables simply cannot provide. The UK has 32 GW of installed wind capacity, but that is the brochure figure. Over the weekend, output fell to just 0.6 GW (less than 2%). And it happened overnight, when solar was at zero. So Britain had a renewable fleet on paper, but functionally nothing arriving on the grid. For hours, wind stayed below 10% of capacity. Batteries do not fix that. They smooth short gaps. They cannot carry a country through long wind droughts. So the real system still needs gas. Ready, paid for, and able to run immediately at 100% capacity whenever weather-based power drops out. That is the hidden cost. Build the renewables, then build the backup, then pretend the first system replaced the second.

In Washington DC, Chris Wright, the new administration’s energy secretary, took the stage and gave an impassioned speech on how concerns over climate change should not prevent Africa from charging ahead with fossil fuel development. “This government has no desire to tell you what you should do with your energy system,” he said. “It’s a paternalistic post-colonial attitude that I just can’t stand.” Wright said Western countries such as the United States have for years been “shamelessly” telling Africa that coal is bad and not to develop it. “That’s just nonsense, 100 percent nonsense,” he said. “Coal transformed our world and made it better, extended life expectancy and grew opportunities, and coal globally will be the largest source of electricity for decades to come.
