Winnie Byanyima, the wife of Kizza Besigye, has revealed that Muhoozi Kainerugaba deployed specially assigned soldiers to closely monitor Dr. Besigye during his detention. According to Byanyima, although the prison already has official guards responsible for overseeing inmates, Dr. Besigye is subjected to exceptional restrictions. She stated that he is not permitted to interact with fellow prisoners, leave the special cell in which he is being held, or participate in recreational activities with other inmates. Byanyima claims that these measures are intended to psychologically weaken him and ultimately threaten his life. A number of people like Nsereko Muhammad are calling on Museveni, the very man who unlawfully abducted Dr. Besigye from Kenya on 16 November 2024 and has kept him imprisoned for over a year in violation of his constitutional rights to "forgive" him. That framing completely misses the point. Like every Ugandan who believes in justice, I want to see Dr. Besigye free. But I'm not going to pretend I desire his freedom more than he does. Dr. Besigye has been consistent from the beginning: the treason charges against him are fabricated, and all he has demanded is what every citizen is entitled to a fair trial before an independent court. This struggle has never been about begging for the mercy of a ruler. It has always been about defending the rule of law against the abuse of state power. Justice is not a favour bestowed by those in power; it is a constitutional right owed to every citizen. As a believer in democracy and constitutionalism, I stand behind whatever decision Dr. Besigye makes. The fight is for justice, not mercy.

After contesting and losing the 2001 elections, he fled into exile, citing threats to his life. When he returned in 2005 to run again, the state pounced. The rape charge dated back to 1997 but was brought just two weeks after his return, alleging he had assaulted a family friend who, by her own admission, had returned to his home several times afterward. The case unfolded amid treason accusations and violent street clashes. Radio talk shows were banned from mentioning his name. Posters supporting him were outlawed. Soldiers ringed the courthouse. I've read the statements made by the four star general David Sejusa, DM. & it's hard to ignore the hypocrisy of his position. When he was in exile & being persecuted, Kifefe Kizza-Besigye was a vocal advocate for his rights. While some of his points may appear valid on the surface, a closer examination reveals a detachment from the urgency & moral imperative of the situation. It is true that the struggle for Besigye's freedom is "beyond Law; Courts; Judges." There is an appreciation that this is about political power. But to suggest that those fighting for Besigye are somehow naive or misguided because they post images of coffins or demand his release is deeply disingenuous. These are not just "high-sounding words of Freedom..." These are the very principles that underpinned the bush war David Sejusa, DM. himself participated in. Are we to abandon those principles now, simply because the fight has become "lethal" for some? Yes, there is concern about "restructuring the military". However, the issue at hand is about the weaponization of state institutions, including the military, to suppress political opposition. Justice, fairness, & respect for human rights shouldn't be sacrificed for the sake of protecting the "blood" that built the UPDF. Surely, Sejusa understands that true stability comes not from force, but from justice & inclusivity. Wow, the "ignorance & indiscipline of 'keyboard warriors'," it's easy to criticize from the sidelines. While insults & blackmail are never productive, let's not dismiss the power of online activism to raise awareness, organize support, and hold those in power accountable. These "keyboard warriors" are using the tools available to them (just like you & the NRA used guns) to amplify the voices that the state seeks to silence. To dismiss us as "kwala-kwalas" is condescending and btw it's not funny. He rightly points out that people don't have to "love Besigye" to support his cause. But he seems to miss the crucial point that this isn't just about Besigye. It's about the erosion of democracy, the suppression of dissent, & the increasing authoritarianism of Yoweri K Museveni's regime. Whether one supports Besigye's political agenda or not, every Ugandan should be concerned about the status quo. The suggestion he makes to "delink Besigye health from your partisan political goals" is particularly troubling. The state is actively denying Besigye access to adequate medical care, while simultaneously keeping him incarcerated on dubious charges. To separate these issues is to ignore the deliberate strategy of the government to wear him down, physically & mentally. Demanding his release to seek medical treatment is not "muddle-headedness", it's a basic act of human compassion. Words are not enough. We need action. We need you David Sejusa, DM., and others like you who have influence and a platform, to use their voices to condemn the injustice being perpetrated against Besigye and all political prisoners in Uganda. It's time to stand up for what is right, not just offer armchair analysis. #FreeKizzaBesigye #FreeAllPoliticalPrisonersInUganda #EndMilitaryRule #CivilianSupremacy

They know Besigye holds the true power – the power of the people, the power of truth, the power of a nation yearning for democracy. All they have are guns, and guns cannot silence the yearning for freedom forever. But fear and apathy are their greatest weapons. They want us to believe that resistance is futile, that our voices don't matter. They are wrong. We must refuse to be silenced. The time for complacency is over. This is not just about Besigye; it's about the soul of Uganda. It's about whether we will allow our country to be transformed into a personal possession of one family, or whether we will reclaim our sovereignty and build a future where justice and freedom prevail. Kizza Besigye and the West's Schizophrenic Position on African Electoral Democracy When veteran Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye was abducted in Nairobi on 16 November 2024 and rendered to a Ugandan military prison, it exposed the brutality of President Yoweri Museveni's regime. Besigye, who has challenged Museveni in four elections, faces charges that could carry the death penalty. In January 2025, his lawyer Eron Kiiza was sentenced to nine months in prison for contempt of court in a trial lasting two minutes. Yet on 21 May 2025, a chaotic meeting in Gulu revealed the contradictions enabling this repression. European Union ambassadors travelled to meet Gen Salim Saleh, Museveni's brother, to complain about threats from Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Museveni's son and Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces. Journalist Andrew Mwenda, invited by Saleh, berated the diplomats for 'neo-colonial meddling'—even as those same diplomats had recently met with Muhoozi to discuss security cooperation. This is the trap: a regime weaponising sovereignty rhetoric to legitimise torture whilst Western powers condemn abuses in public and court their architects in private. As of October 2025, Besigye remains in military detention after more than 300 days. Ordinary Ugandans are left hostage to competing forms of interference that both enable the repression they suffer under.
