Winter watering takes a little creativity in remote pastures without power. When there's no electric water heater, this is my go-to way to keep water tanks from freezing. A metal bucket with hot coals adds gentle heat and helps soften the ice so it's easier to break. #winter

Just to reiterate because many people don't know this: thirst, not hunger or cold temps, is often the worst threat wildlife face in the winter months. You don't have to build a heated pond. If you can leave out some fresh water, or bird baths, and find a way to keep it from freezing, wildlife will appreciate that more than food, believe it or not. Wildlife can't depend on snow. It gets too rough and dirty to consume unless it's freshly fallen. Leaving out water is worth it to see a happy family of foxes.
