UN: Famine Spreading in Sudan as WFP Struggles to Reach Millions Before Rainy Season Sudan now faces the world’s largest hunger crisis, with 24.6 million people facing acute hunger. Over 638,000 people are experiencing catastrophic hunger (IPC5/ famine)—the highest number globally. UN’s World Food Programme warns that Sudan’s hunger crisis is deepening. The details: ➤ Millions are at risk of being cut off from aid as the rainy season approaches, and as armed groups continue blocking convoys and delaying the pre-positioning of supplies in key locations before roads become impassable. ➤ Famine has been confirmed in 10 locations: 8 in North Darfur (including Zamzam Camp) and 2 in the Western Nuba Mountains ➤ Another 17 areas are at risk, including parts of North, South, and East Darfur, the Nuba Mountains, Khartoum, and Gezira ➤ In the worst-hit areas, one in three children is acutely malnourished, exceeding famine thresholds ➤ WFP is reaching over 3 million people monthly but aims to scale up to 7 million by mid-year ➤ WFP says $650 million is urgently needed to sustain operations in Sudan through the next six months. That represents an 80% gap in funding. ➤ Video: No aid convoy has reached Zamzam Camp since October 2024 due to a siege and obstruction by the RSF. Around 500,000 people in Zamzam and 1.8 million in and around El Fasher face extreme shortages, and UN agencies report daily famine-related deaths in both areas.
