Learned something about Bees Today. A male bee mates for less than 5 seconds in midair. The ejaculation is so explosive you can hear it pop from a few feet away. His body rips in half. He falls dead before hitting the ground. And he is one of the lucky males in the hive. When a male bee, called a drone, chases down a queen mid-flight at speeds of 22 miles per hour, his entire reproductive organ turns inside out. The pressure required for this comes from nearly all the blood in his body, which rushes downward to force the organ outward like a spring. The semen fires into the queen with so much force it makes the audible pop. The organ then snaps off and stays lodged inside her like a cork. As he flips backward off her body, his abdomen rips open. The next drone waiting his turn has to physically yank out the dead male's cork before he can mate. The same thing then happens to him. The queen does this 12 to 20 times in a single afternoon. She flies up to a spot in the sky that beekeepers call a drone congregation area. Picture an invisible meeting point about 50 to 130 feet above the ground where up to 11,000 male bees from as many as 240 different hives are hovering, waiting for her. These spots stay in the exact same locations year after year, sometimes for over a decade. No one fully understands how brand new drones, born only weeks earlier, find them. By the end of her mating run, the queen has collected around 100 million sperm cells. She keeps only 5 to 6 million in a tiny internal storage organ that keeps them alive for years. From that supply, she uses just two sperm cells per egg for the rest of her life, laying up to 2,000 eggs a day for 2 to 7 years. After that one afternoon in the sky, she will never mate again. A 2019 study from UC Riverside, the University of Copenhagen, and the University of Western Australia found that bee semen contains toxic proteins that temporarily blind the queen by interfering with how vision genes function in her brain. I loved this amazing lesson about success from Giannis Antetokounmpo, the two-time National Basketball Association (NBA) MVP, and NBA finals MVP from 2021. Antetokounmpo (nicknamed the “Greek Freak”) hails from my home country, and I've been rooting for him for a long time! As he showed in the press conference after his Milwaukee Bucks were eliminated in the playoffs, his attitude about life is every bit as impressive as his athletic ability. Asked whether he considered the season to be a failure, Giannis pointed out that not winning the championship every year isn’t the same as failure, just as people not getting a job promotion every year doesn’t mean they’ve failed in working towards their goals of taking care of their families. And then this was the best part: “You work toward a goal. It's not a failure. It's steps to success.” Which almost perfectly echoes my mother’s motto in life: failure isn’t the opposite of success, but a stepping stone to success. So while Antetokounmpo might not be taking home another championship ring this year, he’s a winner for dropping some freakishly good Greek wisdom that’s just as valuable in life as it is on the court.

The year is 2000. Two men walk into Blockbuster's Dallas headquarters in shorts & sandals. Their company was in $50 Million debt. They asked this mammoth($6B company) to buy them. Blockbuster laughs at their ask of $50 Million. That laugh wiped their existence off the planet. Here's how: Blockbuster had $6 billion in revenue, 9,000 stores worldwide, and 60,000 employees. Netflix had $5 million in revenue, 150 people, and $50 million in debt. But still, this ant(Netlix) was able to eat this elephant(Blockbuster). It started with a phone call at a dude ranch. Marc Randolph, co-founder of Netflix, was on a corporate retreat at Alisal Ranch, deep in the mountains outside Santa Barbara. Horses. Dirt roads. No reason to dress up. He was in shorts, a t-shirt, and thong sandals. That's when Blockbuster called. "We'd like to see you. Tomorrow. In Dallas." Randolph turned to Reed Hastings and said there was no way. Different time zones. No direct flight. Impossible. Then they remembered they were $50 million in debt and had been trying to get this meeting for months. They chartered a private jet. The next morning, they walked into the 27th floor of a glass and steel skyscraper in Dallas. Enormous conference room. A hardwood table the size of a small country.
