When someone becomes suicidal, our culture often responds with panic. We rush to medicate, hospitalize, and contain them before taking the time to truly listen to what they are trying to say. Many people in that state do not need immediate silencing. They need someone willing to sit with them and hear the depth of their pain without fear. They need space to speak honestly about why life feels unbearable and why death feels appealing in that moment. When those conversations are shut down too quickly, the isolation and despair they already feel can grow even deeper.
