Wolf pups start developing personalities from a young age, which, in part, helps pups to quickly form a hierarchy of sorts amongst their littermates. This small pup, with a bold and perhaps reckless streak, was letting us know who the boss was even though it was just a month... old (volume up)! Typically, when we go in to count pups at dens, all the pups scurry into the den and remain together there as far back in the den as they can get. This is the only instance we can recall of a pup walking out to the edge of the den to stand there and growl at us. In other words, this behavior is uncommon. Why is this behavior rare? We suspect it is because pups that come out of the den to 'fend off' predators or danger probably would be killed pretty readily if predators visited the den. The purpose of the den is to provide protection/shelter should danger approach. We do not know what this pup's fate was. We think that 2 or 3 pups from this litter of 4 survived so good decent change he was one of the pups who made it but we won’t ever really know.show more

Probably one of the coolest moments we have had in the field…stumbling upon wolf pups sleeping at the entrance of their den which was a huge old beaver lodge. On this particular day in early May, we were searching clusters of GPS-locations from a collared wolf in this pack to find where it had killed prey. The wolf was a subordinate male wolf and had only spent a few hours on the edge of this beaver meadow so we assumed he was just resting here. I.e., there were no indications, based on the wolf’s movements, that this was a den. We hiked along the meadow edge for a bit and as we got close to where the GPS-locations from the wolf were, an uncollared wolf popped up out of the grass by the lodge about 50 meters away and ran into the forest. That seemed far too coincidental…what are the odds that the GPS-collared wolf had been in this spot a few days ago and now, when we arrive there was a different wolf here. As a result, we immediately started to think the lodge could be a den. We approached the lodge and pulled out our phone to record what we observed. We rounded a side of the lodge, approached the entrance, and we found these 4 pups sounds asleep. What a wild few moments. Of course, we thought this was especially interesting, in part, because the wolves were using a massive beaver lodge—i.e.., the home of one of their primary summer prey—as a den to raise their pups, which then would go onto to hunt and kill beavers as adults.

The Mithrandir Pack captured on camera 21 hours ago at 10 a.m. yesterday morning. We visited the camera and swapped the SD card just a few hours later...only a few hours behind the pack! Mithrandir, as you can see in this video, is comprised of the breeding male and female, and their 3 living pups. The Mithrandir Pack had 5 pups this spring (we tagged all 5 pups), meaning they have had a pretty high pup survival rate thus far. For perspective, the typical pack in our area raises ~1.3-1.4 pups to adulthood on average. One interesting thing to notice is the difference in body size of the pups. Specifically, one pup is much smaller than the others. We suspect this is because that pup is a female and the others are males (females are generally a fair bit smaller than males in our area). Either way, pretty neat to think we were only a few hours behind the pack.

A good example of how different the howling of pups and adults can be at this time of year. These videos were taken by the same camera at a Half-Moon Pack rendezvous site a few years ago. The first portion of the video shows all the pups at the site howling and there are no adults howling. All the vocalizations you hear are pups. The pups have a wide range of vocalizations and often sound like coyotes, given all the yipping and barking. The second portion of the video shows the pups' father, Wolf V094, howling a few days later by himself. These howls are the deep iconic howls we typically think of as wolf howls. We figured the sounds pups make might be of interest to folks because sometimes folks hear canine vocalizations and are not sure whether they are from wolves or coyotes. While the pups do sound coyote-like, you often can still hear some giving high-pitched howls amongst all the other ruckus—pups have much higher pitched howls than adults and their howls also seem to sound different to us than coyotes. And often, but not always, there is an adult wolf or two or four howling when the pups howl, which makes it easier to determine if you are listening to wolves or coyotes. We ended the video with what we think is a great sequence of Wolf V094 trying his best to stay awake after howling but he couldn’t fight his sleepiness any longer!

The breeding male of the Listening Point Pack with his 5 pups following behind him in September of last year. We think all 5 of these pups survived. We have never documented wolves in our area successfully raising more than 5 pups in a year, and raising 5 pups to adulthood is fairly uncommon for our area. Late summer is a super lean time for wolves. If you look at the breeding male’s hips/pelvis, you can see this quite clearly. He is very thin with virtually no fat reserves. This is not abnormal for wolves at this time of year. He is probably thin, in part, due to the fact that he has to obtain enough prey not only to meet his own energetic needs but also those of 5 growing pups. And a real bummer a tree fell over in front of the camera...

The pups of the Cranberry Bay Pack in a remote area of Voyageurs National Park. The den included a large area at the base of a large balsam fir that was surrounded on one side by really thick deadfall…which makes for a pretty impenetrable den. We tagged, weighed, and sexed all 6 of the pack's pups, and will use trail cameras for the remainder of the summer, fall, and winter to understand how many of these pups survive. Now we saved 2,000 beagles!! Ridglan Farms is shutting down. And the pups are going free. Every tear gas shot, every felony charge, every day in jail — it was all worth it. To the thousand volunteers who risked your freedom to save the pups this year, and to the millions of people around the world who followed and poured out your care, I want to say: Thank you. We did it. ALL of us. There are still 15,000+ beagles at MBR who need our help. We’re coming for them. Let’s save them all!!!

The “pups are a fetish” crowd gonna hate to see me fitting my pup hood the fuck OUTTT Anyway fursuits can be a fetish too but y’all don’t care as long as murrsuits are washed, so why doesn’t that logic apply to pups too ?? Using the argument that “it started from bdsm” is stupid imo cause we aren’t where it started anymore. Its almost 2026- pup play started back in the 1900’s. (tho if we are technical, the earliest start was the 1660’s in Englands royal court) - Things change over time & I think pup hoods are an amazing alternative price & health wise !! Not everyone can afford a fursuit & not everyone can handle the restrictions / heat that comes with fursuiting !! You don’t know if they consider it a fetish, a safe space, or both !! There are SFW pups as well as NSFW, but if they aren’t acting inappropriately in public spaces then why doesn’t it matter which category they fall under ??

It’s been a really sad day 💔 Velvet was rushed in for an emergency C-Section and despite our best efforts all the pups have died, some had already passed when born. Mum Velvet has made it through but is very sad. We did ring the local perreras to see if they had newborns with no mum but all the pups were too old. Velvet was rescued just last week and we don’t know anything of her history. All we can do is focus on her future. We are so sorry Velvet that your fabrics were not meant for this world. They were meant for something much brighter 🌈

One year ago, I went into court and told the story of Julie, the blind beagle puppy we found at Ridglan Farms. This is footage from the morning after we rescued her. Julie was so broken that she struggled to walk, climb stairs, or even stand. There are moments where I am so enraged by what they did to her that tears form in my eyes. It's unbelievable to me that this was inflicted on even one gentle pup. The fact that this suffering is inflicted on thousands is simply unimaginable. But we have an opportunity to save them. Today, the Dane County Board votes on whether Ridglan's license should be revoked, and the dogs seized and given to loving homes for care. Tomorrow, perhaps the prosecutors will come to their senses and realize their legal duty to protect those who are most vulnerable among us, like Julie. But in the long run, I know that this nightmare will end. No one can watch Julie cowering and say, "That is the way things should be." And that is precisely why things will soon change. Sending love to each and every one of the little pups still trapped at Ridglan Farms. We are thinking of you, and we won't rest until you're free.

They were coming, they were the ones who go down in the mines, no Burkinabè was there. They were the ones who will come out and say, “Ah, this is what we got! And we only had to nod and accept it.” Once it leaves the mines, it goes directly to the airport where a plane ✈️ is waiting for it, and when it’s finally loaded, it takes off and that was it. This teacher says if you ever wonder why people are leaving the teaching profession in droves, this is one of the main reasons. She has students that she has written an incident report on every single day. She has contacted the principal and the support staff and the help that was given to her was to email the parents of the students. Basically, no help or support at all. We have many epidemics in our country but this is one of the biggest that doesn’t get enough attention. We all know our school system is a failure but even more than we know. Students these days have zero consequences. They are passed with straight F’s. They are allowed to be a continuing distraction and disruption in the classrooms and nothing is done about it. We need to start over. 💯 Why do we allow this this as a school? As a district? As a city? As a state? As a country? It didn’t use to be like this? This is why other countries surpass us in education, there is no discipline in our schools. Would you want to be a teacher in this day and age at a public school?

Parsi: There is no doubt that we have now, after 20 years of hearing from the hawks, that the only solution is to go to war, we tried it. One third of the U.S. Navy was there in the region. This was not a small operation. This was a major operation short of an actual invasion, and it failed. There is just no doubt that the military operation was not a success. And hopefully, at a minimum, we will not be having that debate again. It has now been settled. It's no longer a theoretical or academic topic. It has been tried, proven to be a failure.
