In 2021, when Afghanistan fell to the Taliban, Baroness Baroness Helena Kennedy KC evacuated 102 women judges and prosecutors by raising the funds, securing safe houses, chartering planes and resettling the women around the world. With husbands and children, a total of 508 people were brought to safety. Since then, the United Nations says the Taliban have issued decrees targeting women and girls, including excluding them from secondary education and stripping them of rights and freedoms. We interviewed Afghan women about how the Taliban takeover has impacted their lives. Speaking out carries huge risks so, to protect their identities, we have replaced their faces with artwork created by an Afghan artist and reconstructed their voices in English using AI.
