the ability to do either depending on what is needed. locking on better allows movement without turning your back to the opponent sometimes. but lock on mechanisms in souls games don't tend to be that great.

I guess I'd prefer free combat so that I don't get blind-sided by an enemy I wasn't locked on. But I agree with KizeGaming, having options would be nice. Like being able to turn off locking if a player feels that that particular method of combat does not feel right to them.
