I can see why many dislike this, but for those that have limited (or no) mobility, I think this is something nice. Sure, it ain't the real thing, but if someone can't experience the real thing, at least this is something.

Not gonna lie, this is one of the best uses of VR I’ve seen. Would you want something like this for your parents or grandparents? 👀

Letting elderly residents travel the world over afternoon tea through VR is one of the most thoughtful uses of technology I have seen.

This is beautiful ❤️ Seeing their faces light up on that virtual journey is pure magic. Shoutout to the team at St Vincent's Care Toowoomba for bringing the world to residents who can't always travel physically. Moments like these remind us joy has no age limit ✨ @Purelypositiv #AgedCareInnovation

Perspective is everything. Bring the world to those who can't chase it anymore. That's not sad; that's civilization doing its job.✨

This VR setup for older folks is pretty genius for mental health. A large study actually showed dancing reduces depression symptoms better than standard antidepressants

Solid concept for elderly care and memory care facilities for people that are confined or mobility limited. Memory care units will likely start using full room interaction for memory patients as all they do is sit for long periods and look outside as they lose memory and function.

Do people think they’re stupid because they’re older? This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. This looks nothing like an actual train

well that's actually pretty great, especially for the ones who can't actually travel anymore!

As an amusement ride, I think it's loaded with potential. But it reminds me of the scene in Soylent Green, when Edmund G Robinson chooses the music and visuals for his last hour on Planet Earth. So I kinda have a case of the heeby jeebies.

Looks like a fun novelty. Maybe I'll set up a screen on the wall to look like a window. Then I can pretend to be on a train or spaceship or mountaintop as I work.

If this was a US government run nursing home, these screens would cost 5million each.

If this was done with better screens and actual footage, I think it would be nice.

I don't think this is a world first. Companies have been advertising setups like this for years. Here's a 2023 conference paper about 'train therapy' from Switzerland:

A virtual train + afternoon tea + world tour?? 😭 Do you think this could become the future of elderly care?

Great use of AI / VR tech. They should invest in making the dining area into an actual traincar as well. People should enjoy their latter years.

I wish more retirement home would have this. Something so simple would bring so much joy to them. We are not forever young fam, not being able to move as you once did is a reality some of will face.

This is a lovely idea. I remember many years ago suggesting something similar and being told that technology would never be good enough.

🚨 Canada Effective April 1st 2024: NEW Continuing Care Regulation “Moving to 0 hours of care” Caregiver in tears: “So that means in a continuing care home, someone can be left for a week sitting in their own fecal matter and that's just okay now because it is now not the nurse's job to actually care for their patient.” “New rules do not prescribe how many hours of care residents of a facility should receive.” “The vulnerable in our world are supposed to be taken care of, and now the government is making it so that isn't even a thing anymore. We're going back in f****** time instead of forward, and I'm just baffled by this. How can you go to school and become a nurse and not give a **** about the people you're taking care of. There's already so many terrible nurses in the medical industry that try to get away with doing the bare minimum so that they keep their job. And now the government is telling them, you don't even have to do the bare minimum to keep your f***** job. It is now lawfully backed that you do what? The fuck is the point of a care home and a continuing care facility if they're not going to have assistance. This is f***** wild. Basically, now what this means is if you have not set yourself up for retirement, which the majority of the population has not because who are we f****** kidding? In this day and age, it's hard enough to put milk and eggs in everyone's fridges. It means that you're not gonna it's not funded. You're not gonna get the help that you need. You're not gonna have the products you need. You're not gonna have the care you need. They literally sent a patient who had a stroke to recover alone in a hospital or sorry, in a hotel in Leduc. Someone who had a stroke was sent to recover alone in a hotel in Leduc. I give up on this world. I didn't think it could get worse.” More information: “Care standards at continuing care facilities to be eliminated, say nurses and NDP - New Continuing Care Act Regulations coming into effect April 1” Alberta’s nurses warn that new provincial regulations will eliminate any legal requirement for continuing care operators to provide nursing care to residents. Last month, the province published a new Continuing Care Act Regulations that are supposed to take effect on April 1. The regulations do not mention a minimum number of required hours of nursing care. “We are moving to zero hours of care. This is extremely dangerous,” said Heather Smith, United Nurses of Alberta president, in a statement. Smith said while that was clearly inadequate, at least there was a minimum legal standard.” United Nurses of Alberta Says “New regulations eliminate all nursing care requirements for residents of continuing care homes in Alberta”

Today we're unveiling something truly extraordinary—one of the coolest and most transformative technologies: Mixed Reality Testing (MRT). Since launching Waabi World four years ago, we've been building towards this pivotal moment - bringing our virtual testing capabilities into the physical world to fundamentally transform what's possible in autonomous vehicle development. For over 100 years, closed-course testing has been the staple of vehicle safety testing. But creating scenarios on a physical test track resembles elaborate movie-stunts—it’s difficult to reproduce tests consistently, those tests do not capture the diversity of the real-world, and the range of safety-critical scenarios we can test is very limited because of the risk of damaging equipment or, worse, endangering lives. MRT changes everything! In the same way that augmented reality goggles blend the physical world with a virtual world, MRT enables the Waabi Driver to drive autonomously down a physical test track while simultaneously experiencing numerous intelligent, simulated actors that coexist in this hybrid reality and react to each other and to the physical world in naturalistic ways. All this is possible by leveraging Onboard Waabi World, a version of Waabi's neural simulator that runs in a few milliseconds on the onboard compute. As Onboard Waabi World generates new scenarios, the real physical sensor readings are modified instantaneously so the Waabi Driver can react to the blend of real and virtual elements while driving in the physical world. This fusion creates a first-of-its-kind reality that unlocks unlimited testing possibilities previously impossible to achieve safely or practically. Traffic jams can materialize instantly, motorcycles can weave between lanes, crowds of pedestrians can jaywalk unpredictably, children can dart into the street from behind parked cars, animals can wander across the road, debris can appear in lanes creating hazardous obstacles. The possibilities are endless. This breakthrough eliminates all traditional constraints of closed-course testing. We can do exponentially more tests than ever before and in a continuous fashion, with extraordinary levels of diversity and realism. Most importantly, we can push the boundaries of safety testing without real-world consequences. MRT represents the culmination of years of work toward safe, scalable autonomous deployment. It's been central to our testing approach for over two years and fundamental to achieving feature-complete autonomous driving capabilities earlier this year. But this is just the beginning. MRT’s impact extends beyond self-driving trucks – we’re laying the foundation for a future where any physical AI system can be tested and validated safely - from robotaxis to humanoid robots, manufacturing automation to healthcare robotics.
