Bull crap. You always need to let your horse know that you are coming from behind. And even then don't risk it too much. A horse Rancher who I was a ranch hand for for a bit wasn't able to do much of anything due to getting kicked in the sternum by his horse. Known that nag for many years

I grew up with horses and you should always put your hand on their butt when walking behind them and I am in my 70's now and I still automatically do it.
