There’s places outside London/M25, still within a 35min commute by train to a main station that are nice and affordable. If you can put up with an hour commute (train/tube), you’ll have more options, especially on £100k+ salary to find a nice 2-bed apartments. Get over yourself.

if the tax brackets had moved with inflation we wouldnt have a problem but the fiscal drag is so much now that comparatively we are still earning 2008 wages while paying 2026 prices... tax free allowance should be at £25k now, higher rate should start at £80k...

Other UK cities with lower overheads are available... Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, Liverpool... All have lower cost housing, good universities, and vibrant nightlife. London prices WILL destroy you. Move North. It's cheaper but you may want a warm jacket.

I lived in the UK 25 years ago, and it was the same: London itself was only affordable to the very well-off. Most people rent. If you wanted to raise a family, it would be far more affordable to live outside the M25 in the commuter towns.

Actually, all problems are social problems. This wouldn't be an issue if the neighborhoods with ￡500k houses weren't crime-ridden and run down. You'd just be in a 10% less nice neighborhood that's slightly inconvenient because it's a 28 min train ride into city center.

She’s right. I moved south in 2006 when it was affordable. I’m not from money/worked in finance but I couldn’t get on the PL even on a decent wage. The rent was high & I paid out £2k before I even looked at lifestyle. It’s got worse. I Left broke in 2014. Happier in the north.

This is oddly correctly, incorrect. The life she’s talking about is one of probably that west London life. You can live in London for 100k, you won’t be rich rich, but you’ll def be fine. I’m on way less than her, live alone in zone 2, and go out all the time. It’s calm.

It might surprise you, but there’s not much motivation keep working hard for a higher salary due to the tax system. There’s no incentive, and without constant hustle you’ll lose your job and salaries are not forever. You’ll lose the house and no universal credit for you. For the racists in the comments, why don’t you apply for a >= 100k job yourself since you’re so superior? And the ignorants who have no idea of cost of commuting and time from outside London should research it.

Our country and capital city is not an economic zone. Not one thoughtful comment about the native English being less than 30% in their homeland capital. Deport.
