In today's Fraud Committee Hearing about the upcoming Paid Family Medical Leave Program, the Walz Administration said they couldn't possibly prevent fraud unless they terminated the program or they paid staff an amount equal to the benefits distributed. "In any state program, to eliminate the potential for fraud, we would either need to eliminate the program or we would need to staff it to such a degree that the cost of running it would start to get close to the cost of the benefits being provided." "We need to look at this from an ROI perspective... if the goal is the impossibility of fraud, I don't think that's realistic."

Democrats just tried to amend Chair Schomacker’s (R-Luverne) bill that formally ends the fraud-riddled Housing Stabilization Services program. The Noor amendment would block DHS from taking the same action it took last summer to shut down the most fraudulent Medicaid program in state history. It would prohibit DHS from ending a Medicaid program or requesting federal assistance without waiting for the Legislature. That means if another program were found to be 90% fraudulent during the interim, DHS would be forced to keep it running until 2027, unless the Governor called a special session. That is not responsible governance. The executive branch should be able to act quickly and decisively to stop fraud, not be forced to look the other way. Plain and simple, the Noor amendment would have allowed fraud to continue during the interim. Thankfully, House Republicans stopped it.
