Writer Drew Goddard explains his process behind adapting ‘PROJECT HAIL MARY’ into a film. “I really do think this movie is about the power of empathy and compassion... I’ve done stuff in the superhero space, and I sort of thought of these as like the superpowers of this movie.”

Drew Goddard gets it. Project Hail Mary isn’t a space survival story. It’s a story about two completely different beings choosing connection over fear. In a world drowning in superhero films where fists solve everything a movie where empathy is the superpower might be the most radical thing Hollywood has made in years.

omg i love that drew goddard is all about that emotional depth, lmao a movie about empathy and compassion is just what we need after a long year of dealing with stuff

Empathy as a superpower sounds deep but will audiences actually show up for it?

This is the kind of optimistic sci-fi we need right now.

who else thought this movie would be lasers and aliens, not hugs and feelings? 👀👇

If this film is done right it will make grown adults cry over a character that has no business making anyone cry. Book readers know exactly what that means. Everyone else is completely unprepared.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

Calling empathy and compassion ‘superpowers’ sounds profound, but in a blockbuster sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling, it feels like Hollywood’s latest way to dress up feel-good messaging in a spacesuit.

i think that’s what resonates with people most even surpassing interstellar and other space saving mission movies because it genuinely is about finding companionship and ones worth in the loneliest of spaces and in a death mission out of the galaxy

The relationship at the heart of this book is one of the most unexpectedly moving things in modern science fiction. If Goddard captures even half of what Andy Weir put on that page this film will quietly become one of the most important ones of its generation.

Interesting take. Framing empathy and compassion as the story’s superpowers gives a fresh perspective on what makes the film impactful beyond the sci-fi spectacle.

It was great

Id you can see this kindly Repost

compassion topping capes feels like fresh sci-fi gold

Can’t wait

Drew Goddard adapting Project Hail Mary is the right call. he wrote The Martian screenplay, did Cabin in the Woods, knows how to make people care about a guy stuck somewhere impossible trying to think his way out. exactly the right hire for this book

Empathy as a superpower? That’s the kind of storytelling we need more of.

Well said, a sci-fi movie with empathy is the real superpower. Love Drew Goddard's perspective.

Okay I need to watch this movie Empathy as a superpower? Hmmmmph

Extremely rushed at the start. It was ok but compared to the book it could've been better.

The power of engagement and empathy loaded in one💯

Anyone who loves animals understands how much more selfless, pure & faithful our love for other species can be than for other humans -- and theirs for us. And how much more powerful platonic friendship can be than romantic love. These characters would die for each other.

drew get back into writing we need more peak

Might be movie of the year in 2026

If ever a film's publicity and promotion has made me want to see it less than I did before, it is with this movie.

Let’s have it

empathy as a soperpower we need more of that

That’s what makes great sci-fi hit differently — not just spectacle, but emotion. If empathy is the real ‘superpower,’ this could be something special.

The Mummy returns after 25 years; this is how its cast looks

Empathy and superpowers I think that’s the best for now

Empathy and compassion? I thought the main superpower was just being Ryan Gosling.

Makes total sense for Hail Mary, the science is brilliant, but it's the human (and alien) connection that really carries it. Goddard gets it. Can't wait to see how he pulls that off on screen.
