Carson asks Letterman about NBC choosing Jay Leno to succeed him, and Letterman doesn't pretend he didn't want the job. He admits he would have liked it but he also makes it clear that he wasn't angry at Carson, Leno, or NBC. Then the conversation gets even more interesting. Letterman questions whether he could even do what Carson had done: host the same late night show for decades without eventually wanting something different.
