I heard a take about this film that she’s supposed to represent a wife abused by her husband so much, it normalized her to take it and appease the abuser so that she wouldn’t get hit anymore (from what I remember of that take).

she knows what Buddy is, so she just smiles and acts like nothing is wrong

@Zhane_Star I mean Oliver still died but I'm willing to give him some slack since like the other kids he’s been brainwashed to forget his entire life and only love Buddy. Plus Freddy rightfully calling him out on the fact that Mr Train and Wade wouldn’t have been killed in the first place.

As seen by the massacre scene, she definitely knows what Buddy does and what he is, but she probably refuses to do anything about it because well, yknow

She's the stand in enabler for abuse. Her lines are mostly just "Say you love him! You shouldn't have made him mad!"

Most likely scared. I’m certain she’s aware about Buddy’s history knows if she doesn’t play along with Buddy, she’ll die. She technically trying to survive.

Two sides within abuse cases within some fearing or trying to escape and the other trying to mitigate. Betty here seems to be the latter as we see especially in the final act. It's likely she has seen Buddy at his worst and out fear tries to maintain calm in the environment
