We are excited to share our work “Event-Aided Sharp Radiance Field Reconstruction for Fast-Flying Drones” published in IEEE Transactions on Robotics IEEE Transactions on Robotics (T-RO), which tackles sharp radiance field reconstruction under agile drone motion, where RGB frames are heavily motion-blurred and pose priors become unreliable! 4 years in the making! Code & dataset released! PDF: Code & Dataset: Full Narrated Video: High-speed flight is essential for time- and battery-constrained missions (e.g., inspection, exploration, search & rescue). However, fast motion corrupts visual data with severe motion blur and introduces drift/noise in visual-inertial odometry, making NeRF-based 3D reconstruction particularly brittle. We propose a unified framework that leverages asynchronous #EventCamera streams together with motion-blurred frames to reconstruct high-fidelity radiance fields from agile drone flights. Our key idea is to embed event-image fusion directly into radiance field optimization while jointly refining a shared, continuous-time camera trajectory initialized from event-based VIO. This enables us to recover sharp radiance fields and accurate trajectories without ground-truth supervision during training. We validate our method on synthetic data and on real sequences captured by a drone flying up to 2 m/s. Despite severe blur and noisy pose priors, our method preserves fine scene details and achieves a performance gain of over 50% on real-world data compared to state-of-the-art methods. 🇺🇸🇮🇷🇮🇱 - US-Iran Air Campaign (Feb 15 – Apr 16) Over the last 2 months, Rerum Novarum has tracked 7,642 publicly available US military flights in support of Operation Epic Fury. Involving over 572 unique aircraft, marking the largest US air power buildup since Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Over the course of the 60-day air campaign, 1,601 transatlantic crossings were made, averaging just over 26 transatlantic flights per day. 195 unique cargo aircraft made 1335 flights across the Atlantic, and 182 unique aerial refueling aircraft made over 228 flights across the Atlantic; over 80% of these aircraft made a 1 way trip across, inferring they stayed within the CENTCOM/EUCOM AOR to support the operation. The US Military currently fields roughly 475 aerial refuelers, meaning almost 40% of the military's refueler aircraft were used to support Operation Epic Fury. Many of these refuelers were likely towing attack aircraft into the region, which we cannot track. In the two weeks leading up to the operation (Feb 14→28), 1191 flights were made into Europe and the Middle East, with an average of 85 flights per day. Since the first day of the war, 28th of February, the US Military has maintained an average of 141 military flights per day within the CENTCOM/EUCOM AOR, with the busiest week being March 14→21, with 1262 flights, and an average of 180 flights per day. The most active aircraft type during this operation was; C-17 (Cargo): 3399 Flights. KC-135 (Aerial Refueler): 2703 Flights. C-130 (Small Cargo): 850 Flights KC-46 (Aerial Refueler): 217 Flights C-5M (Large Cargo): 185 Flights These cargo aircraft (C-5s, C-17s, and C-130s) flights combined have a theoretical maximum uplift capacity of 651,385,985 lb (295,555 metric tons), or about 1,427,000 cubic metres of cargo space. The attached video shows the full 60 day air campaign of all publicly available flights. This data only includes public flight data; military aircraft can, and do, turn off their public ADSB transmitter whenever they want to, therefor flights such as B-52's or fighter jets rarely show themselves on public data except for special cases which makes them hard to track. Although aircraft used for cargo or refueling generally fly with this data publicly accessible in safer areas,meaning the overwhelming majority of these support flights were captured.

Another ill-fated take-off over V1 (in this case, V2!) June 13 1996: Garuda Indonesia Flight 865, a DC-10, crashes in Fukuoka (Japan) 3 of 275 aboard die. On take-off, the jet had just left the ground when one of the engines failed. Crew opted to reject the maneuver; the aircraft was unable to stop safely and left the runway: landing gear collapsed, and the airplane caught fire. Inquiry noted pilot actions by aborting takeoff above V1, where SOP dictated pilots should have continued takeoff and deal with the engine later. The nose was raised, and at a speed of 158 kts, the first officer called "Rotate". It was 12:07:40. Three seconds later, at a radio altitude of 9 feet, a fan blade of the 1st stage HP turbine from the no. 3 engine separated. The N1 dropped to 23,7% within a few seconds. At 12:07:45, the flight engineer called "Engine failure number one." Takeoff was aborted at about the V2 speed, and the airplane contacted the runway one second later at a vertical acceleration force of 2.1 Gs. The thrust reversers were deployed and ground spoilers were extended. The DC-10 skidded off the runway through a ditch, fence and a road, before coming to a halt 620 m past the runway threshold. Investigation revealed that the turbine blade that failed, had operated for 30913 hours and 6182 cycles. General Electric had advised customers to discard blades after about 6000 cycles. Accident cause Although the Aircraft was well in excess of V1 and the aircraft had already lifted off from the runway, the takeoff was aborted. Consequently, the aircraft departed the end of the runway, came to rest and caught fire. It is estimated that contributing to the rejection of the takeoff under this circumstance was the fact that the CAP's judgement in the event of the engine failure was inadequate."

🧵 Evasive Maneuvers In the aftermath of the USS Trembling Puppy acknowledging the loss of yet another fighter aircraft in the midst of a Yemeni missile attack, many speculations have arisen regarding what actually happened. The "official" story is that an F/A-18 and its tow tractor were flung overboard while performing "evasive maneuvers" in the face of oncoming Yemeni anti-ship cruise missiles. Many are skeptical of the "official" story of the jet going overboard as a result of an evasive maneuver. Some think a US carrier would not even attempt an "evasive maneuver" to elude a cruise missile. But US carriers are trained on such maneuvers, even though I suspect they have limited potential efficacy. Some think the Yemeni may have used loitering drones to shoot down an F/A-18 on landing approach to the carrier. This is an interesting conjecture, and while I do not dismiss it outright, I consider it less likely than the "official story". Let's first consider the anti-ship cruise missiles, which are either Iranian "hand-me-downs", or at least based on legacy Iranian designs, with a range up to 2000 km, a speed of ~.7 Mach, and a ~250 kg warhead. From a launch point in Yemen, it would require over an hour of flight time to travel the 1000+ km distance to the carrier strike group in the northern Red Sea. It must be assumed that US surveillance assets are able to track such missile launches along their entire path, and so CSG-8 should have been continuously apprised of the position of the various components of the strike package. In other words, Rear Adm. Sean R. Bailey, commander of Carrier Strike Group Eight, and Captain Christopher "Chowdah" Hill, commander of the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), both should have had real-time intelligence at every moment for 4+ hours of drone flight time, and over an hour of cruise missile flight time. That said, the MQ-9 Reaper drone is one of the integral components of US persistent surveillance capability — and as has been widely reported, the Yemeni have now shot down 22 of them, several in the last month alone. So it is altogether possible that US surveillance of these missile launches could be meaningfully impaired. At any rate, I figure the Yemeni are firing cruise missiles which, at best, have about a 250m circular error probability at a distance of 1000+ km. Even a salvo of a dozen would struggle to score a hit on a moving ship 1000 km away — and the Yemeni have typically only fired 2 or 3 in any given salvo. But apparently at least one got through the perimeter air defenses and the combat air patrol on this particular occasion, and was on a threatening track towards the Trembling Puppy. Therefore Captain Soggy Cookie veered in a panic, dumping an F/A-18 and its tow tractor into the sea, and splashing salty seawater into the still-open wound of the Trembling Puppy's February 2025 collision with a cargo ship just north of the Suez Canal. Anyway, no matter the as-yet-uncertain details, it's clearly another indisputable embarrassment for the US Navy, which has sought in vain for a year and a half to break the Yemeni selective blockade of the Red Sea. With the recent addition of the USS Timid Vinny (CVN-70), which is cowering somewhere in the calm blue waters of the northern Arabian Sea, the Yemeni have now put the fear of Allah into five separate US Navy carrier strike groups over the course of the past eighteen months. Alas, as I have long observed, there are #NoEasyWarsLeftToFight. In any case, this simple fact remains: against all odds and prior expectations, the chronically underestimated Yemeni remain the gatekeepers of the Bab-el-Mandeb, and are inflicting upon the United States Navy one of the most decisive strategic defeats in its heavily mythologized history.
