Three unidentified people were seen climbing out of a sewer on Manhattan's Upper East Side before fleeing in two vehicles early Wednesday morning. The incident was captured on an NYPD surveillance camera, authorities said. In total, five men are believed to have entered the sewers through a subway access gate at East 63rd Street and Fifth Avenue. Based on the timing, they are believed to have been in the sewers for hours, searching for lost valuables and metal-like copper that can easily be resold. The suspicious incident is believed linked to an open pattern of more than 20 cases of suspected Venezuelan nationals searching for lost valuables in the sewer. The cars used as getaway vehicles have been linked, as many of the vehicles involved, to this ongoing pattern. The incident is the latest in a series of reports involving people entering or emerging from sewer and manhole systems across the New York area in recent months. Similar incidents have been reported near Penn Station, in Queens, Brooklyn and on Long Island. In some cases, those involved told police they were searching underground for valuables.
