XBOX CEO Asha Sharma says that gamers want physical media, so they are announcing when you purchase a game you get both They are keeping physical discs, and when you buy one it will come with a digital entitlement How it will work: - Put the disc in an Xbox that has a disc drive - Launch the game - Claim a digital license on your Xbox account - After that, you can play the game without putting the disc in, the disk will still work like a normal game disk The digital license is tied to that specific disc, not permanently locked to you forever If you sell or give the disc away and the new owner inserts it and claims it, the digital license moves to their account and comes off yours This is the way it would be. Getting both physical media and digital media that you can own and sell Launch is with 1,000 games and more coming later

RUMOR | John Linneman said he heard from a couple of sources that Microsoft was very much going to continue disc support before the Xbox “reset” He heard “Microsoft was actually very much going to continue disc support, not because they value disc retail sales but because they wanted to ensure that all your Xbox games were still be playable on new Xboxes.” He mentioned that Xbox “could offer maybe like an external drive or basically some means. And I think that might all tie into this disc to digital stuff as well.” Also speculated that he sees a “future where Microsoft supports physical games going forward for users that want to take their library with them while Sony just completely cuts people off.” via: Digital Foundry

Jez Corden explains disc-to-digital (Project Positron) conversion platform You literally put the disc into the console, and it gives you a digital license for the game permanently for your Microsoft account. If you give the disc away or sell it; if it gets connected to another Microsoft account, you lose access to that digital license. You don't need the disc to keep verifying it. It's whoever last used the disc who gets the license. In 2013 (Xbox One launch) there was a rumor that retailers were going to unlock the disc, but that wasn't actually true, but it was badly communicated, and Xbox leaders misunderstood how the feature was going to work. It became a huge cluster that they had to scrap. You get the full game, you get the Xbox Cloud version, you get the Xbox Play Anywhere version, and you get the license as if you purchased it digitally. PS5 Pro's lack of a disc drive is upsetting to some, but it's more-so a reminder of presentday reality. 80% of EA's sales are digital. 90% for Capcom. And so on. If you're using discs on a console this generation, more power to you. Just accept you're a relic from a bygone era.
