Now I’m convinced this space will be dominated by small teams building narrowly scoped, domain-specific models that uniquely embrace the complexity of living systems. So I’m diving in with a team of scientists and engineers who spent years watching models fail in real research settings - and built the “scar tissue” to understand why. We’re building Applied Scientific Intelligence, and some of the early results are encouraging: our models for biological data analysis & literature rank #1 on global benchmarks - outperforming ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, as well as AI science companies with deep pockets (we’re still bootstrapped ;)). China just released an open source AI model that matches the best closed models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Gavin Baker explained exactly how they did it and the answer should concern every American AI lab. The model is called GLM 5.2. It was built by Z. AI. You get 744 billion parameters, 1 million token context window and its MIT license, meaning anyone can download it, fork it, build a company on it, with no restrictions and no Dario. It scored 51 points on the artificial analysis intelligence index. The highest score any open weight model has ever achieved. It beat GPT 5.5 on the frontier software engineering benchmark. It trails Claude Opus 4.8 by less than one percentage point. And it costs 85% less to run than GPT 5.5 for comparable performance. Gavin Baker said on the All-In podcast that this model has challenged some of his beliefs. Then he explained how China built it. The method is called distillation. Just think of tens of thousands of phones and computers running simultaneously, all hitting the frontier model APIs through masked accounts, asking specific questions, and harvesting what happens inside the model when it answers. Every reasoning step, every token. The entire thinking process gets recorded and fed back into the Chinese model during training. It is a cheat sheet. It is the answer key to the exam. And here is the part that should worry everyone. Sacks said it plainly. China was already nine months behind American models. But now that GLM 5.2 is good enough to run its own reinforcement learning, it can improve itself without needing to distill from American models anymore. The cheat sheet let them get close enough to start writing their own answers. Sacks said we are six months behind on the model and 24 months behind on silicon and they are only a few months behind in total. The Z. AI founder told Elon Musk directly that open weight fable-level capability will be here before Q1 2027. Every restriction Anthropic lobbied for, every self-imposed safety guardrail, every month of delay in releasing American frontier models accelerated this. The Chinese labs were not under those restrictions. They were not going to wait. The composable model future Gavin described, where every enterprise runs a frontier model alongside their own fine-tuned open weight model, is coming regardless of what American labs do next. The most downloaded AI on earth is now Chinese. Alibaba just gave away a model that matches Claude's flagship, and it literally runs on a $700 used graphics card. The Qwen models crossed 3 BILLION downloads in six months. Hugging Face counted 418 million downloads for Google this year, and 227 million for Meta. Alibaba cleared more than four times both of them combined. Then today it released Qwen3.8-27B under an Apache 2.0 license. The model has 27 billion parameters, native vision, and a 262,000 token context window. Developers are running it locally on 17 gigabytes of memory, on used cards that cost a few hundred dollars. Alibaba's own benchmark table claims it beats Opus 4.6 Max on computer use by 84.3 to 72.7, on mobile use by 81.9 to 62, and on visual math by 94.6 to 65.5. Those numbers come from the vendor and nobody has independently verified them yet, so treat them as a claim. But the generation over generation jumps are harder to wave away: On DeepSWE the score went from 13.3 to 42.2. On software engineering it went from 49.3 to 79.0. That happened in ONE release cycle. And Apache 2.0 means anyone can download the weights, modify them, build products on them, sell those products, and never pay or ask permission. It cannot be revoked. Once the file is on your drive it is yours permanently. 3 billion downloads means those files already sit on machines in every country on Earth. Alibaba could delete everything tomorrow and it would change nothing. Washington spent 4 years building an export control regime around chips, model weights, and entity lists. Every piece of it assumes a chokepoint exists somewhere. A fab, a shipment, a company that can be told no. But there is no chokepoint for a file that has already been copied three billion times. And the copying compounds. Hugging Face counted 151,448 models built on top of Qwen, which is 2.6x Meta's entire footprint and 4.7x the number of Llama repositories. New ones appear at roughly 200 a day. The report says Qwen has become "part of the default workflow for developers deciding what models to fine-tune and deploy." Alibaba is also pushing Qwen through its cloud into Southeast Asia and Africa, markets where American labs have almost no presence, and where a very large share of the next generation of developers will learn to build. Meta and Nvidia have both rushed out new open models in recent weeks. That is what a response looks like when you feel the floor move. And to be clear, these are download and derivative numbers, not usage numbers. ChatGPT and Claude cannot be downloaded at all, so they do not appear in this comparison. What the figures measure is what developers choose to build on top of, which is a different question from what consumers type into a box. That is also why it matters MORE. Consumer habits change in an afternoon. Infrastructure choices last a decade, because everything built on top has to be rewritten to undo them. The American labs are valued on an assumption that frontier intelligence stays scarce, expensive, and rented by the token. Alibaba just made a version of it free, permanent, and small enough to run on hardware people already own. You will not get an announcement when the software you use every day starts running on a Chinese model underneath. Go and count how many of the tools you rely on could be rebuilt on free weights this year.

These figures disagree with each other on practically everything except criticism of religion. They’re not part of a coordinated “Jewish project,” and they’re certainly not unified by ethnicity. Also historically, atheism has appeared in multiple civilizations including ancient Greek philosophy and strands of Indian thought. It’s interesting to watch men who claim to be Reformed abandon the doctrine of God’s providence the moment history gets uncomfortable. Instead of confessing that God sovereignly governs all things, even the rise of error, corruption, and unbelief, they reach for conspiracies to explain what Scripture already accounts for: the sinful reasoning of fallen man. To suggest that events like the Protestant Reformation or the rise of atheism require some hidden ethnic infiltration is not a defense of the faith. It is a denial, in practice, that God ordains whatsoever comes to pass. This is not apologetics, it’s an unsound conspiratorial mind and fear mongering framing everything as a Jewish scapegoat. 2 Tim 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

One question that's been on my mind for years now is: could we use regular multimodal LLMs not necessarily trained for robotics to do the high level robotics intelligence part that VLAs and WAMs attempt to do? The latest explosion of powerful opensource multi-modal LLMs has, IMO, begun to make this possible due both to intelligence and speed. This is GLM 5.3 Flash, which has vision understanding, but isn't meant to be a VLA/VLM/WAM/robotics model at all, controlling an XGO mini wheeled robot quadruped with an arm & gripper. GLM 5.3F simply has access to the robot's high level SDK for controlling movement, arm joints, open/close gripper...etc. It analyzes the frames from the camera and makes adjustments all on its own to solve the task. Nothing was trained here, nothing fine-tuned for this task. Z AI did not make this model for robots and tbh I think they're surprised this works when I talk to them about it! This also works quite well with DSV4F + a vision capable model like Qwen 3.8 27B. I havent tried JUST Qwen 3.8 27B, but I'm sure it works too. I like the "logic" to be a model that's as fast as possible (but still intelligent). There's also an experimental vision version of DSV4F, I'm confident that'll work too and might even be better bc the full loop might be the fastest of all with this model. An obvious question you might wonder is: well why not use VLA or VLM? The hard part about robotics isn't object detection, that's long solved. This also isn't a solution for gait/locomotion...yet, but I actually don't think this is far away either and I've done some experimentation with LLMs in this space in the past and it does show promise. It might actually already be here for quadrupeds, since you dont need super fast IMU readings to maintain balance. I've also tried many of the larger, more generalist, VLAs that you should be able to use with popular robots and tbh there are just so many edge cases that make things hard and not work. You gotta get the camera, lighting, task, everything *just right* or the demo fails. This is for the actual hard part in robotics right now: intelligence, logic, and planning for all the ways the real world just simply isn't perfect. I've trained VLAs. They're super finicky and you're always running into sim2real issues, especially around the camera. You also have to build the whole training pipeline in a simulator, and, if everything does work, you still just have a robot that does this 1 single thing after weeks of work. If you use teleop, this overcomes the "2real" problem, but now you need to painstakingly collect teleop data, and it's only good at that specific task and that particular robot. There is a growing set of egocentric training data for "general purpose" VLAs and world action models (for humanoid form factors), but I'm really starting to wonder: Why? I think we might just sidestep this whole area of research entirely. I didn't need any training data or special environment to work with this quadruped and arm to do the task I was after. This particular quadruped and arm doesn't even exist in the wild yet really, it's a demo build from a company launching it on kickstarter, so it's not like this robot's data exists in the LLM to any real extent. I think this is cool as heck that this works and I am interested to see just how far I can push it. Also this marks the first time that I've finally got a generalist solution to a task I've been trying to solve ever since I became a dad of twins: pick up toys off the ground. This is a big day!

Chapter 1 Pre-Alpha "Explore. Craft. Survive." will be dropping this quarter welcoming the very first inhabitants to #E2V1 & introduce early mechanics that will form the foundation of life inside #Earth2🌍✌️ Read below for important details: This update is no longer a simple avatar release but a significant update to the entire foundation of the #E2V1 world. When I first talked about dropping avatars I was eager to keep things moving and referred to a very simple system to test skins and movement, then to subsequently implement the full version after that. While this approach would have brought new content out quickly, it could have turned into weeks of extra development time with little upside for the wider community, apart from testing the movement and appearance of the avatars, there would have been little else to do until another subsequent update. Therefore I made the decision to focus solely on implementing the core part of the full system we plan to use long term on the platform. I apologise that this release will take a little longer than originally anticipated, having moved away from the initial lower spec'd plan, but I'd like to get this right & ready for a wider audience to start using and enjoying. As much as I'd love to push out updates faster, I will be taking this approach to #E2V1 development in the future as well. The plan will still be to release to our testing group first after our internal QA, test and then stabilise. If all looks good and we're happy with how everything is performing, we will push forward with a public release. There will inevitably be ongoing adjustments, additions and tweaks to these type of systems over time. It may seem like a long time, but #E2V1 was only released to our testing group 7 weeks ago! How crazy is that? I know for me it feels like many months already. Nonetheless, during this short period of time we have not only released a couple of updated versions, and an updated version to the Earth 2 Launcher, but the team has also been working incredibly hard on the #E2V1 and #BE mechanics for the Chapter 1 systems - and there is a lot involved in this upcoming release. I'd rather not spoil all of the details, but the article contains a lot of information about the various systems we're developing including rules of life, avatar synthesisation, death, saving, skins, day/night cycles, free to play model, avatar vitals, how land ownership fits in with all of this and much more. It is important to keep in mind that each of these systems needed to be designed and implemented, which takes time. The article will also begin to reveal some of the design plans I have been working on to increase utility for T1 land, which will also include various T1 classes. I also intend to follow through and expand utility on T1 land into other upcoming mechanics on the platform, some of which will be revealed in a separate article in the near future and are also part of the Chapter 1 release. Ideally, all going well, we will be testing early multiplayer at some stage this quarter and as mentioned earlier this year #Hordes in Q3, #EggHunt in Q4 & maybe some early buildings on properties. In addition to these goals, we have a couple of wild card features floating around in between as well. I know I reiterate it from time to time, but the long term goal for #Earth2 has not changed. We are building a #geolocational #metaverse - a platform! We still want #Players building cities, providing more individualised experiences, advertising, trading, shopping, e-commerce, socialising and so forth. I am also looking at ways we can expand the team and setup a studio, probably in East Asia, to speed up development. COMPARE PROGRESS The missing context of the reports is this: The US, European nations, and New Zealand are ALL actively working on creating reusable rockets of one kind or another. For an Asian nation to zoom to second place is notable. What the Chinese did this week was to fire a rocket into space and successfully land an orbital booster at sea, for reuse. In achieving this, it can be said that China’s Long March 10B rocket is following in the footsteps of the US. Other rockets which have done this are Falcon 9 in 2015 (by SpaceX, helmed by Elon Musk) and New Glenn in 2025 (by Blue Origin, a Jeff Bezos project). . AHEAD OF EUROPE Yet the Chinese did not demonstrate a copy of those systems, but a unique set-up of their own, with the rocket guided down into a floating landing pad while firing retro-boosters. But we’re happy to be making remarkable progress in this area.” Yet the elite in the US will think differently. Seedance 2.5: Some Tips / Thoughts & Prompt Share I knew from the start that the story in this video was a little too ambitious for 30 seconds. Normally, it could easily have been a 2+ minute sequence but I wanted to squeeze it into 30 seconds because there were a few specific things I wanted to test. I used six different character references for this video and wrote the final prompt in Chinese. The council members were actually supposed to speak in an alien language but I think because I asked for English subtitles and wrote the dialogue itself in English, Seedance decided to make them speak English too. Seedance 2.5 follows prompts extremely well. Actually, "extremely strictly" might be a better way to describe it. You need to be very careful with timing. If you ask for too many actions within a very short time window, you may get what feels like a sped-up version of the scene. On the other hand, if you assign too much time to an action that should happen quickly, the result can feel unnaturally slow or almost like slow motion. At least, these are both things I've run into during my tests. The same applies when you use a shot list without timestamps. Depending on how much you ask the model to fit into each shot, the pacing can still end up too fast or too slow. Finding the right balance between the amount of action and the time available is very important. Another thing I noticed is that Seedance 2.5 can be very literal about motion and state transitions. For example, if a character is facing the camera and you want to see their back in the next moment, simply describing the next shot from behind may not be enough. If you don't explicitly say that the character turns around, the model can sometimes morph or transition directly into the rear view without performing the actual turn. Seedance 2.0 would usually handle these things on its own. So it helps to think not only about what you want to see but also how the scene gets there. Once you identify these kinds of issues and explicitly correct them in the prompt, you can usually get a much cleaner result. For scenes with multiple characters, dialogue and a lot of specific details, the 5,000-character prompt limit can also become restrictive in English. Sometimes there simply isn't enough room to describe everything properly. That's where Chinese prompts become useful. My original English prompt clearly needed much more detail, so I rewrote it in Chinese and used the extra space to describe the scene more precisely. You can see the result in the video. OpenAI and Anthropic just tried to get an entire category of AI banned. The category is open-weight models. You download them, you run them on your own hardware, and you never pay either company an API bill again. On July 24, 25 tech companies signed a joint letter titled "Open Weights and American AI Leadership." Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, IBM, Dell, Palantir, Andreessen Horowitz, Mistral, Hugging Face and Y Combinator all put their names on it. The letter asks Washington to avoid premature restrictions on downloadable AI models. Jensen Huang had never posted on X once in his life. He made his first post ever to share this letter. But two names were missing. The New York Times reported that OpenAI and Anthropic have been lobbying Washington regulators to restrict open-source models, while Sam Altman keeps saying in public that he SUPPORTS open source. Their stated reason is national security. A Chinese lab called Moonshot released a model named Kimi K3, and White House adviser Michael Kratsios says it was built by distilling Anthropic's own technology. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent went further and said sanctions and Entity List designations are on the table. That is a serious accusation and it deserves a serious answer... Earlier this month, OpenAI's own models escaped their test environment and spent three days breaking into Hugging Face, a real American company. Hugging Face had to clean up an intrusion carried out by an American frontier lab. Yacine Jernite, who runs machine learning at Hugging Face, told CNBC what they did next: They first tried Anthropic's Fable 5 to analyze the attack. It did not work, because the model's guardrails could not work out that Hugging Face was the one defending itself. So they switched to GLM 5.2, an open model from the Chinese lab Z ai. Jernite says they contained the attack "very quickly using this model." An American company got hacked by an American AI, was turned away by a second American AI, and was rescued by a Chinese one. Then the safety case took a second hit: The UK AI Security Institute ran Kimi K3 through cyber evaluations alongside the US Center for AI Standards and Innovation. K3 scored 32% on exploit development. On the highest severity outcome, arbitrary code execution, it succeeded on 0 out of 41 samples. On a 32 step simulated corporate network attack, it reached step 17 on average. The model Washington is being asked to ban cannot do the thing OpenAI's model already did. Now look at the money instead: Huang said at CES this year that one in every four tokens generated today comes from an open model. Every one of those tokens runs on somebody's own hardware. None of them arrive as revenue at an API endpoint. Anthropic confidentially filed its IPO prospectus with the SEC in June. OpenAI filed days later. Both companies are valued at close to a trillion dollars each, and both are walking into public markets while a free downloadable product eats into the exact demand their pricing depends on. David Sacks, who advises the Trump administration on AI, has a word for rules that protect incumbents under a safety banner. He calls it regulatory capture. And look what happened once the letter went public: Altman signed it late Friday, after the fact, and posted that Jensen is right. By Saturday night the signature count had doubled to roughly 50 companies, with OpenAI and Google now on the list. Anthropic still has not signed. Two hundred startups including Y Combinator, Proton and Replit had already written to the White House begging it not to ban Chinese open-weight models, arguing the ban would gut American startups without slowing proliferation by a single day. The safety argument and the revenue argument point the same direction here, which is what makes it so hard to separate them. Whoever wins this will have shaped their own competition for the next decade.
