As a fellow humanities major-YUP. My sister who’s a doctor even switched from a chemistry major to humanities major (anthropology) bc she recognized talking to people is a skill a lot of her STEM peers are SEVERELY lacking in. She’s now considered one of the best docs too so🤷🏽‍♀️

Humanities are important. Peple need to recognize that. An English Degree gives you a multitude of skills.

In the 80s they would force Engineering and other technical degrees to take TWO years of Humanities courses. We always wondered why bother (accounting major included). This is why. It humbles you and it helps you talk to others not specialized in your field.

Entry level STEM jobs are at much bigger risk of being replaced than any of the humanities and it’s already happening

Humanities majors read, write, research, critically think, and have a greater level of empathy than most other majors due to all of the papers they've written, literature they've read and different schools of thoughts they've been exposed to.

My literally history major and Spanish minor over here has gotten seven job interviews in a month in fintech and my stem friends haven’t. There’s a reason why. There has always been and will always be a demand for humanities. No matter how much you want to ignore the truth

I was talking to my friend about this. Some STEM ppl love to put down those ppl in non STEM fields but both are smart in different ways. I work at a tech startup. I legit HAVE to do this lmao bc they don’t think of things like this . The communication is just not there

Not true, the engineer’s time is monetarily more valuable than hers So they pay her to talk to people because the engineer’s hourly rate is so much higher than hers

As a software engineer, I love having someone else to do the documentation. I do my best and then pass it off to the technical writers. I appreciate every cog in the wheel. Same with the design team. I hate when I get design tasks cause we have a whole design team

My daughter has a degree in journalism and decided not to pursue that field. She had a job as a money laundering analyst and was valued because her reports were well written.

A lot of the stem people are totally incapable of thinking outside the box! And they can’t write for shit!

It’s not that the engineers CANT talk or present it, it just wastes time that companies don’t want to waste especially on engineers salaries. Imagine being an electrical engineer, work 30 hours on Xilinx to make or update an ic…and then spending more time to explain it…

My undergrad school did the whole liberal arts thing where we had to have foundation courses in everything and then our majors and minors were focused separately. It's the best way.

That's why I was hired for an engineering company 3 years ago. I had English and History degrees and was replacing someone with a Philosphy degree. Still working in the engineering field.

Yeah. That's been my career for the past 15 years. And the bane of it is being supervised by senior comms who are not comms at all, but engineers and scientists who are female who still can't communicate outside their field.

More than that, humanities are important for being able to understand our history, politics, and media literacy. So many people who think they’re smart get conned by wanna be cult leaders.

This is bullshit I am a scientist, all of my colleagues are scientists, and they are some of the best communicators and storytellers I’ve ever seen. Do you honestly think you can be successfull in science without communication skills? Ridiculous!

How were you able to understand it if they’re bad communicators and you don’t have the technical background? The real reason they split up these jobs is because it would be way too much of a burden on one person. But I do agree SOME are bad communicators.

I have also had this job. Though to be fair, most of the engineers I worked with *were* good communicators. It's just not an efficient use of their coding time to write blog posts, explain things in plain English to clients, and create press releases.
