People forget that monks get trained evasion and defence from a young age, Aang being the last Airbender to learn such skills with real air nomads under proper airbending masters is able to defeat any Airbender. Thats just focusing on his air bending not his other bending.

Aang in the Avatar state should have demolished him. But have to tone down the Avatar for plot. If you can't write a compelling story because a character is "too powerful," you're a bad writer.
