Yoshishige Yoshida on Yasujirō Ozu's obsession with Tokyo: "Ozu-san was obsessed with Tokyo. Many of his films were set there, and ''Tokyo' is often in the title. Examples include 'Tokyo Chorus' (1931), 'Woman of Tokyo' (1933), 'An Inn in Tokyo' (1935), 'Tokyo Story' (1953), and 'Tokyo Twilight' (1957). The probable reason for this was that Ozu-san was born in Tokyo; however, he never really tried to depict his home town. It is true that some of his films showed scenes of Tokyo, but Ozu-san did not possess the will to probe this big city and depict it realistically." ("Ozu's Anti-Cinema", Yoshida, Translated by Daisuke Miyao and Kyoko Hirano, 1998) P.S: On this day, 69 years ago, "Tokyo Twilight" (1957) was released in Japan.
