Yea this rule needs to change. Bubba Thompson was called out despite running perfectly down the line and getting hit in the back while coming straight down on the base.

He was running in a perfect straight line what was he supposed to do, if anything Boyd’s throw was off line I hope it changes

This is just bad umpiring. He’s right on the line the whole way. The throw is bad. It’s in the runner and not to the inside of the bag where the target is. You can’t be out of the line when you’re on it the whole way. Brutally bad call & umps will face no consequences for it.

Supposed to run in foul territory - line is in fair territory - batter is out.

The solution is a double bag at first which eliminates the need to run on the foul line.

I'm 70 years old & I swear, I griped about how ridiculous that rule is when I was 8-10 yo. I never made sense & still doesn't.

He may have run "perfectly down the line," but he was clearly in violation of the rule requiring batter/runners to have both feet within the lines defining the running lane while running to 1st base. The rule doesn't need changing, but your understanding of it definitely does.
