I’n happy someone finally referenced Madonna’s sex book (released in the early 90s?), because Carpenter’s album cover instantly reminded me of a photoshoot that was included in her book but I can’t find it. I’ve been thinking about Madonna’s sex book the last several days with all the outrage and I’m surprised that not many people referenced it. The photographs were vivid imaginative and very alive though, a lot of expression as if they were film stills. But it’s also about timing and the 80s and 90s were about embracing the ‘taboo’ and all the outage causing public scene. It’s not like that today, sex is normalized it doesn’t shock people. The album cover isn’t even a photograph I’d see in a magazine because aesthetically appears cheap and low budget in quality, as if someone took a photo using their phone and they just posed in the corner of an apartment. It’s not an “album cover”. That magazine cover for The Rolling Stone - or the images included in the shoot - would’ve made a more iconic album cover because the lighting, costume, etc just looks more professional and aesthetically pleasing. The album cover isn’t original even in idea or thought not just expression. The current album cover her expression is just giving a sweaty during/post-sex flushed cheeks caught off-guard with the parted lips and vulnerable “I’m 18-25 and just discovered my sexual instincts & don’t know how to regulate” submissive gaze. Of course the men are going to love it, in an ideal world all women drool over them and need to have sex with them to achieve an orgasm or else they feel useless. It doesn’t even matter what a woman does, as long as she learns to not be fooled by men. Don’t be the fool and always get what you want.
