Cypress trees of the Mausoleum of Augustus, planted in the Fascist era, are being cut down this week. My understanding is that they will be replaced with more systematic plantings that will not damage the monument. Ancient sources detail the cypress trees in Antiquity on the monument- so they will be back!

Provisions are also made for canals, lakes, and other water bodies around these developments. Within a few months, these areas begin to look green and habitable. India can adopt a similar approach. Instead of planting saplings and leaving them unattended, we can plant mature trees that provide immediate greenery and environmental benefits.

Know that I say this with total love: what’s wrong with planting palm trees and banana trees in NC is that you’re destroying the natural beauty of this state. Palm trees are only native to a very small portion of Brunswick county. Banana trees? They’re not native at all. When I was growing up finding a palm tree? That was like magic. It was an experience that left you breathless. Today, transplants and developers have planted them all over Wilmington. A place they didn’t exist at all 30 years ago. You know what’s been lost as a result? Gorgeous live oaks dripping with Spanish moss and miles of longleaf pine forests. And it’s not just Wilmington that suffers from this invasion. You can find palm trees planted all over the coastal plain - all the way up through Raeford. They’re a hideous and tacky eyesore that destroys what North Carolina is really supposed to look like and it’s a threat to our natural heritage. If you want palms… if you want banana trees, move further South. 🙏🏼

Someone said India can’t protest. Here is India. The Rajasthan Government is now on the back foot, saying only 0.01% of trees are being cut. Why cut even that 0.01%? Did your father plant those trees? You can’t ensure planting or survival, yet you cut what already stands. A tree takes decades to give the oxygen you erase in minutes. Who gave you this right? Trees are not your property. You are not the owner of the forest you’re only its caretaker, a chaprasi of that jungle.

Huge fire in Pasadena/SGV and sirens are going off every minute. Trees and trash cans are blocking roadways as the wind is hurtling. The last time I remember the winds being this bad was in elementary school and school was closed for a few days because trees hit the power lines.

Did you know the black bottu/bindi used on kids to ward off the evil eye wasn’t always from Kohl / kajal ? Traditionally, it came from the exudate of the Vengai tree (Pterocarpus marsupium), a beautiful native tree that literally “bleeds” when cut. I saw this beautiful tree during my field visit. The tree’s timber, valued next only to Red Sanders (Semmaram), is durable but never used for main door frames, as stepping on it is considered disrespectful. Under Green Tamil Nadu Mission Vengai is being planted in farmlands and around 10.3 lakh saplings have been planted so far in the last three years. Vengai trees are truly a natural heritage #Trees #InternationalDayofForest #VengaiTree
