yeah its not like there was any particular reason why they stopped mid-race refuelling in the first place

some people are saying it’s safer now & i’m sure it is, but still not safer than not having it. it also made races so boring because it was so much harder to change strategy decisions and resulted in LESS race variety people just love the idea because of the nostalgia

muting now, everyone go watch spain vs portugal and pray we get to see ronaldo cry by the end of the match 🤞

Dude. Most other motorsports have mid-race refuelling and incidents like this rarely happen anymore, and when they do, they are VERY quickly dealt with

1) i know they rarely happen, but they still happen more than not having refuelling at all. 2) even if you don’t care about the safety aspect, refuelling meant less on-track action. why reintroduce something that makes the sport less exciting to watch & less safe?

Oh I never disagreed on the whole on-track action part, I was refuting your claim that the very rare fuelling incident was why it was banned/why it is not a thing anymore Refuelling works a lot better in less aero dependent racing series where they can follow and overtake easier

they did refueling for another 15 years after this

yeah and this vid shows 7 other incidents where cars continued to set on fire as a result of that

Other motorsports manage it just fine. Seems like a skill issue to me.

Holy fuck are you soft. Its an inherently dangerous sport.

Basically every other discipline refuels mid race. This is a terrible take.

Man, can´t you find an older example?

Do you even know why this happened? Every race series that does mid race refuels, use atmospheric/gravity based systems F1, because "F1 is pinnacle", decided that it was too simple to have an atmospheric/gravity fed system, and instead required pressurized fuel rigs at 1.1 bar

Procedures have changed, mechanism changes, nomex firesuits, undergarments, and helmets required for everyone, even the fuel mixture itself has changed since 1994. F1 needs to grow a pair of balls again.

Every other series in the world manages refueling just fine.

That was 1994. Refuelling was banned 14 years later. And it was banned for cost cutting reasons. It had almost nothing to do with Verstappen’s fireball. So please no revisionist millennial hysterical nonsense

Minor burns to Benetton mechanics and Verstappen Sr in 94, Massa's hose incident Singapore 08 mechanic injured (not seriously) That was it.

Holy fuck you fake ass F1 DTS fans are so annoying. EVERY MOTORSPORT REFUELS. F1 can too. No one is gonna die from refueling. Nascar refuelers use big fire proof aprons. INDYCAR sprays water to dilute any residual fuel. There are ways to avoid this.

NASCAR does it all the time. It's more exciting Racing isn't a safe sport, the quest for zero risk is killing it

Benetton was under investigation and latwr penalised for this. They cheated by removing limiters from refueling hoses, so fuel would flow faster.

There’s risk of someone being hit by a car in the pit lane so we may as well outlaw pit stops outright them. Maybe we should even outlaw human drivers and marshals so the risk is nonexistent

Woah he looks exactly like Max in that shot

we got much better fire protection now and if fighter jets can sefely refuel mid flight we sure as shit can figure out a solution for f1 cars

Other disciplines in motorsport refuel all the time, and they're fine. It is not somehow beyond the capabilities of supposedly the best teams in the world to put petrol in a car.

Gravity fed fuel systems solve this issue. F1 made unsafe fueling.

literally every other series can do it

Wasn't that the cheating no filter fuel rig

F1 fell off the moment softies like u became fans

Or this. Then again, Indycar has been refueling since the beginning, and they are doing fine. Why can't F1 replicate what Indycar has? Or is it because everything in F1 is done at lightspeed?

most advanced motorsport in the world apparently can’t figure out how to not set itself on fire during refuelling but the dumb hicks who turn left all the time did lol you guys are ridiculous

Did you know that this accident was Benetton's fault, not the FIA's? They had removed a safety filter designed to prevent splashes so the fuel would flow in faster. They were heavily fined for it.

Maybe they gave new systems for it now. Also they removed something to make it go faster. And this was the result.

I'm amused that the pinnacle of motorsports can't figure out how to safely fuel cars like all the inferior racing series can

Every other motorsport does it with few incidents WEC does dozens of refueling procedures per event and they almost never have problems. This is a complete and utter skill issue on F1's part.

Wasn't this because Benetton illegally modified the fuel flow for faster stops? It's worked perfectly fine for decades in every other championship and all the fuel systems in those series are standardized

This particular incident happened because Benetton were cheating btw

It doesn’t seem to be a problem in Indy car and NASCAR in the states! I’m sure F1 can do it too

the jos verstappen fire clip is engraved in every f1 fan's brain

Honestly my first thought isn’t “is this good/bad,” but, “are they considering this change because they did the math and returning to V-8s in 2030-2031 like they are planning will necessitate refueling for the cars to finish the races they currently manage on a single fuel load?”

It was never about safety, it was about reducing costs and making on track action more exciting. The FIA tried to bring in race refuelling back for 2017 and 2022 and the teams said no. Not on safety grounds, but because it would make the racing worse.
