I don’t think Asiwaju betrayed El-Rufai because Asiwaju never promised him any ministerial appointment, and El-Rufai never negotiated for one. Immediately after the election, El-Rufai went to Abuja to meet with Asiwaju. He said that if Asiwaju wanted to compensate him for what he did, he should give him the speakership, and Asiwaju agreed. El-Rufai then name-dropped Abbas, and he was given the Speaker position. Everything else given to his camp was at Asiwaju’s discretion, not part of what they bargained for. If he didn’t include El-Rufai’s name in his ministerial portfolio, what could El-Rufai do? Absolutely nothing.
