Only one month earlier, Leibel was playing Piano and singing beautifully at a memorial for other victims of terrorism. A year after a stellar final round that saw Gary Woodland finish T-2 at the Houston Open, he birdied three of his final four holes Thursday and sits solo second at 6 under. Two weeks ago, Woodland let the world know he was battling PTSD after brain surgery. What has the response been like? "I literally feel like I got a thousand pounds off my back that day. It was hard to do. I was crying going into the interview and I left feeling a thousand pounds lighter. "I have a battle that I'm fighting, but it's nice to not do that alone, I can tell you that. We'll take it one day at a time and continue to get better."

I hesitate posting this for a bunch of reasons, but I think it's good to just be transparent about everything. I love to highlight all of the incredible things that FSD does, but I also think it's good to talk about any issues that it has currently. In my opinion the E2E on the highway needs some major changes. This clip was from my drive yesterday, and it is without a doubt the most dangerous situation that FSD has put me in. Yes, I am aware that it is FSD Supervised - everything that happens in the car is ultimately my responsbility. I just was wanting to see what the car would do, and I was hoping that it would make a better decision to be honest. Let me know what you think.

This is one of the most heartbreaking interviews I have ever done. “She wants to LIVE,” the husband of Jolene Van Alstine tells me. Jolene had planned to end her life through Canada’s MAID program because she couldn’t get the surgery she needed after 8 years of incredible pain and loneliness. My team is working around the clock to bring to her the United States for that surgery. Her husband’s response brought me to tears: “I love her with all my heart and I will do anything to get her the help she needs. But at the same time, I can’t blame her…If it was me, I think I would have had a gun to my head long ago.”

Morning Update from Charleston: Blood work came back fine, they will be dealing with the kidney this afternoon and at that point we will know if the surgery is set or not. Current tentative plan is to admit me tonight with surgery tomorrow and a new life after that. Things can still go astray so I’m not in the clear just yet for surgery/transplant but everything is on track as of 10:30am. Thank you again to all that have stuck with me through this and been there for the journey. It has meant more than you will ever know, I am thankful to have those people in my life. Happy Monday and will have another update around 4-5pm.

My last case of 2025 and my first case of 2026 tell you everything you need to know about our healthcare system. Last week, I was scheduled to do a DIEP flap for a patient who had been waiting a long time. We had asked her insurance company if we could do the surgery in network at @Redbudsurgerycenter, where we have everything needed to safely and efficiently take care of her. They hadn’t approved that, so the surgery had to be scheduled at an older hospital in town. When we arrived, the hospital was having HVAC issues. The humidity levels were not safe for surgery. We waited for hours, and ultimately the case had to be canceled. It wasn’t just her surgery. Multiple surgeries were canceled that day because operating under those conditions would have been a fire risk. We weren’t able to reschedule her surgery before the end of the year, which means her deductible resets. I could have safely done her surgery at Redbud that day but insurance rules wouldn’t allow it. This is what closed networks and rigid systems look like in real life. Now here’s the contrast. The first case I’m doing in 2026 is also a woman who needs breast reconstruction with DIEP flaps. This time, instead of traditional insurance, her employer uses a third party administrator. They came to me directly and asked what I would charge if they paid fairly and transparently. On Monday, we’re doing her bilateral DIEP flap at @Redbudsurgerycenter. I can control the environment, the costs, and the care. It’s better for the patient and significantly less expensive for the employer. This is called Direct Specialty Care. It’s not direct primary care. It’s specialty care delivered without unnecessary barriers. It’s happening. We’re starting the year this way. And I’m going to keep pushing the boundaries and keeping you informed.
